I would like to sarcastically give a big thanks to NYU Langone's medical team, Dr. (Hye In) Park, MD, NP (Ariela) Cummings, Dr. (Michelle R.) Bennett, MD, and let me not forget Mount Sinai specialist Dr. (Voravut) Sarabanchong, MD. Thank you for persistently dismissing my unbearable medical symptoms, attempting to do internal pelvic exams with large sized speculums or large cotton swabs to either recreate the stabbing, contraction-like pain I have been in for over 9 years of my life or attempt to make sure that I was actually in fact experiencing the symptoms I was having. ...P.S. yes I do have to live with a chronic, lifelong diagnosis of advanced endometriosis stage 4 and its residual impact. Even with all the MRIs you have ordered you still did nothing besides try to place me on birth controls. I understand that endometriosis is under-researched and understudied, but what is your excuse being a medical professional who is supposed to be up-to-date with all conditions and provide quality care to everyone that entered your office?
I do not have enough fingers on my hands to count how many times I was/had:
-My symptoms dismissed
-Told it was just a "painful period" or the frequently used term dysmenorrhea ---Well I'm here to tell you that Endometriosis is NOT just a painful period, it affects every moment of my life
-Told to go on birth control and trialed on different birth controls without examining where the endometriosis has infiltrated
-Scheduled with numerous external ultrasounds which yielded the same results for the past 8+ years
- Had been told by you that all you had to do was recreate the severe pain I was already experiencing
-Not given all the exams I needed to be given a diagnosis of Endometriosis and other comorbid diagnoses
-Not provided with holistic, multidisciplinary care as endometriosis requires holistic support from the medical team, e.g., nutritionist, endometriosis specialists, endocrinologists, pain management specialists, rheumatologists and the list goes on
-Having years of being giving the same medical tests and reports indicating endometriomas, cysts, without taking many steps further to provide series of tests
-Having my symptoms and post-surgical symptoms compared to an ankle fracture --well the difference between an ankle fracture and endometriosis is that ankle fractures can be readily diagnosed. Ankle fractures can heal over time and is not a life long battle. Ankle fractures are not dismissed by doctors like yourself. Ankle fractures are not affecting 1 in 10 women daily and also do not vary from woman to woman
-Encouraging me to complete a speculum examination with a large speculum even though I was experiencing significant amount stabbing, organ ripping and contraction-like pain. Even though it goes against my religious beliefs.
I am here to say please strive to do better for the sake of women like myself and other women who may have symptoms in the beginning stages of the progression of endometriosis or any other women's health conditions. Even though my medical concerns were not taken seriously to the point where I had to endure multiple surgeries, have severe and extensive nerve pain, and residual comorbid effects.... please please please provide optimal care and support for others that enter your office!
Even if you may not have all the answers with every profession and life role we have, there is always an opportunity to learn and grow, especially with your extensive years of medical school and taking a Hippocratic oath.
#A better job is needed to be done at loving our neighbors as ourselves, whether it's patients who come into our offices, care we provide, or people we simply pass by # I AM more than my endometriosis and another medical examination, I AM a human being!!
