Breast Imaging Center at NYU Langone Hospital—Suffolk
Bad experience, they tell you to get there 15 minutes early, then I sat there for 45 minutes, I had to leave, God knows how much longer I would have to wait. Our time is as important as the doctors time, have some respect.
Frequently Asked Questions About Breast Imaging Center at NYU Langone Hospital—Suffolk
What breast imaging services does the Breast Imaging Center at NYU Langone Hospital—Suffolk provide?
We provide screening and diagnostic mammography, breast ultrasound, breast MRI, and image-guided/minimally invasive breast biopsies, all interpreted by fellowship-trained breast imaging radiologists and supported by NYU Langone patient navigation and scheduling services.
How do I prepare for my mammogram?
On the day of your mammogram, avoid deodorant, lotion, or powder under your arms or on your breasts; wear a comfortable two-piece outfit (you’ll undress from the waist up); tell the technologist if you are breastfeeding or have breast implants; and bring any symptoms or concerns to the technologist’s attention.
What should I bring to my breast imaging appointment?
Bring any prior mammogram images or reports (films or CD-ROMs) if available, your physician’s prescription/order if provided on paper, your insurance card, and for some MRI exams bring your implant card if applicable.
Do I need a doctor’s order to schedule an imaging exam?
Yes — you’ll need an order from your physician to schedule most imaging exams. If an NYU Langone doctor ordered the exam, you may be able to self-schedule via MyChart or the NYU Langone Health app; otherwise please call the imaging scheduling line for your region (for NYU Langone Hospital—Suffolk imaging scheduling: 631-654-7448).
How and when will I get my mammogram results?
Your images are reviewed by a radiologist with breast imaging expertise. Most reports are available within a few days (typical windows stated: within several days to about 6–10 business days depending on the exam) and results are posted to your NYU Langone Health MyChart account and forwarded to your referring physician.
Are mammograms safe?
Yes. Mammography uses a low dose of radiation; the amount is small and the benefits of screening or diagnostic evaluation typically outweigh the minimal radiation risk. If you have questions about safety, radiation exposure, or individual risk factors, discuss them with your referring physician or our radiology team.
