I am writing as a long-time customer of Sterling Optical, having trusted your services for over three years. I feel compelled to report a deeply concerning experience at your Newburgh, NY location involving one of your staff members, Liz L. (Mexican girl with purple hair).
On April 2 and April 9, I was assisted by Liz L. when scheduling annual eye exams for myself and my daughter. On both occasions, her behavior toward me was unprofessional, dismissive, and at times openly aggressive. She was unwilling to provide basic assistance with my glasses, and her tone and attitude suggested impatience whenever I asked questions.
I understand that she may have limited education, customer service or people skills; however, that is not an excuse for the level of treatment I experienced. As a paying customer, I deserve to be treated with professionalism and respect.
What is especially troubling is the clear disparity in treatment I witnessed. While interacting with me, Liz was cold and hostile, yet when a Caucasian woman entered the store, she immediately became warm, attentive, and accommodating. The difference in behavior was noticeable and concerning.
Additionally, on April 9, after purchasing my glasses, I was handed them without a case, cleaning cloth, or receipt. I had to repeatedly ask for these standard items, which only appeared to further frustrate Liz. No customer should have to advocate for basic service after making a purchase.
I would also like to note that under the New York State Human Rights Law, places of public accommodation are prohibited from providing unequal or discriminatory service based on race or other protected characteristics. Customers are legally entitled to full and equal access to services without discrimination.
Given this, I am requesting that this incident be taken seriously, reviewed thoroughly, and addressed appropriately. I also urge your company to ensure staff are properly trained to provide respectful, inclusive, and consistent service to all customers.
I trust that Sterling Optical will take appropriate action regarding this concern.
