I initially considered NYU Langone Transplant Center one of the best, but my experience was extremely disappointing. During the pre-evaluation process, they found some reason to deny my case and did not allow me to request a review or appeal the decision.
They also did not consider it necessary to communicate the results of the tests or provide proper follow-up. A confirmatory or repeat test was not done, and overall communication felt very limited and uncoordinated.
My attempts to reach the team were largely ignored, and the nurse only started responding after I involved the patient complaint department.
The evaluation process itself was also very difficult. It lasted around six hours, during which approximately six different doctors came in and repeatedly asked the same questions many times, which was exhausting and confusing.
At one of the tests, I also felt that a doctor began to put pressure on me, which made the experience even more stressful.
In general, communication and coordination were poor, and there was very little transparency or patient support throughout the process. In a way, it may be better that this happened before a transplant, because I would not feel comfortable continuing with a clinic that communicates in this way. I hope the center improves its patient communication, transparency, and overall approach to care

My grandmother had a deceased-donor kidney transplant at NYU Transplant Institute a little over two year ago. During the pre-transplantation and pre-transplantation process, the team of doctors, nurses, care coordinators were phenomenal. They made us feel supported throughtout the journey and we wouldn't be where we are today without them.
The wait for the transplant was about 3 years-ish, but we transferred there from another kidney transplant center in another health system in the city where we had been waiting for many years; so perhaps this played a key role. As long as you are on top of your appointments and accountable for your health/lifestyle, you will beat the condition- this wonderful place will just help you and supports you along the way. Thank you for everything.

I am almost 1 year post op kidney transplant, everyone is supposed to be assigned a case manager and social worker. None established, And the supervisor Catherine has never returned my call to rectify the gross incompetence.

Choosing NYU Langone for my living kidney donor transplant was the best decision I’ve ever made. The level of care here is simply unmatched. The kidney transplant journey is long and often exhausting, but the team at NYU made me feel supported every single step of the way.
Why I recommend them:
• The Surgical Team: The surgeons are true innovators. I felt incredibly confident knowing I was at a facility that leads the nation in successful kidney transplants and complex cases.
• The Living Donor Program: Their coordination for living donors is seamless. They prioritize the health and comfort of the donor just as much as the recipient, which was deeply important to my family.
• Proactive Monitoring: Post-transplant care is where they really shine. The nephrology team is incredibly "on it"—monitoring labs closely and adjusting medications quickly to ensure the new kidney thrives.
• Patient Portal & Access: Their communication through NYU Langone Health MyChart made it so easy to stay on top of my medications and get fast answers to my questions during recovery.
If you are dealing with ESRD or looking for a transplant evaluation, look no further. This team gave me my life back, and I am eternally grateful for their skill and their kindness.

The NYU transplant team far exceeded my expectations. With so many transplant centers in New York, choosing NYU was one of the best decisions we could have made. Although the transplant evaluation process can feel overwhelming, with extensive testing and procedures required to be listed, the team does an outstanding job coordinating care every step of the way.
My husband was successfully listed and received his kidney transplant at NYU, and the care he has received has been exceptional. As a living kidney donor, I can confidently say their donor team is absolutely outstanding. A special thank you to my angels, Michael and Joe, for always calming my nerves and guiding me through this journey. You will not regret placing your trust in the NYU transplant team.

What types of transplants does the NYU Langone Transplant Institute provide?
The NYU Langone Transplant Institute provides a full range of solid-organ and specialized transplants including kidney, liver, lung, heart, pancreas, bone marrow (blood & marrow) and specialized reconstructive transplants (including facial transplants).
How do I get evaluated or referred for a transplant at NYU Langone?
To begin evaluation, patients are typically referred by their primary or specialty physician to the Transplant Institute. The evaluation process includes a medical history and physical, specialized testing, and multidisciplinary review by transplant surgeons, physicians, nurses, social workers, pharmacists, and other team members to determine candidacy and next steps.
Does NYU Langone perform living-donor transplants and how do I become a living donor?
Yes. NYU Langone performs living-donor kidney and liver transplants. People interested in becoming living donors are evaluated through the Transplant Institute’s donor program; prospective donors should contact the transplant team to start the donor evaluation process and learn about eligibility, testing, and protections for donors.

What should I expect after a transplant (hospital stay, medications, follow-up)?
After transplant surgery patients can expect a short inpatient recovery followed by frequent follow-up visits. You will need lifelong immunosuppressive (anti-rejection) medications, routine blood tests and clinic visits to monitor organ function and medication levels, and guidance from the transplant team about activity, infection precautions, and travel. Exact hospital stay length and follow-up schedules vary by organ and individual clinical course.

Yes. NYU Langone participates in clinical protocols and specialty programs (for example, studies and protocols that expand donor pools and evaluate novel approaches). The Transplant Institute lists participation in research, clinical trials, and specialty protocols on its education and news pages; patients with questions about protocol eligibility should discuss specifics with their transplant team.
