Thank you so much to Dr. Andrew Christiana for his sensitive approach to my diagnosis in just six months of examination and for putting in such effort that, at 39 years old, I'm only now learning the meaning of my diagnosis and where exactly it came from. I really hope to be able to overcome this condition, and I believe this is possible thanks to such doctors and his sensitive approach. Thank you again 🙏
Frequently Asked Questions About Comprehensive Epilepsy Center
What services does the Comprehensive Epilepsy Center provide?
We provide multidisciplinary outpatient care for adults and children with epilepsy, including advanced diagnostic testing (EEG, video‑EEG, ambulatory EEG, high‑resolution MRI, magnetoencephalography), individualized medication management, dietary therapies (ketogenic/modified Atkins), neuropsychological care, sleep disorder evaluation, surgical treatments (temporal lobectomy, lesionectomy, corpus callosotomy, hemispherectomy, multiple subpial transections), neurostimulation options (vagus nerve stimulation, responsive neurostimulation), laser ablation, and access to clinical trials and research.
Do you treat both adults and children?
Yes. We care for people of all ages — our Comprehensive Epilepsy Center includes a Pediatric Epilepsy Program staffed by pediatric neurologists and an adult program; we evaluate and treat infants, children, adolescents, and adults.
What diagnostic tests and evaluations are available?
We offer a full range of diagnostic services including routine EEG, ambulatory EEG, inpatient video‑EEG monitoring, high‑resolution MRI, magnetoencephalography (MEG), and neuropsychological testing; these are used to define seizure type, localization, and candidacy for treatments including surgery.
Do you offer epilepsy surgery or other interventional treatments?
Yes. For patients who may benefit from surgery, our team offers a spectrum of procedures — from standard resections (e.g., temporal lobe resection) to hemispherectomy or lesionectomy — as well as less‑invasive and neuromodulation options such as responsive neurostimulation (RNS), vagus nerve stimulation (VNS), deep brain stimulation in selected cases, and laser interstitial thermal therapy. Surgical candidacy and risks are determined by a coordinated multidisciplinary evaluation.
Are clinical trials available through the Comprehensive Epilepsy Center?
Yes. Our center runs a robust clinical trials program across pediatric and adult epilepsy, enrolling patients in studies of new antiseizure medications and novel therapies. If you have uncontrolled seizures and are interested in trials, speak with your doctor or contact our clinical trials team to evaluate eligibility.
How do I schedule an appointment, get referred, or contact the center?
You can find a doctor and schedule an appointment via NYU Langone’s Find a Doctor tools or call the Comprehensive Epilepsy Center directly at the location phone numbers listed on our site (for the Manhattan center: 646‑558‑0800). Referring physicians can use the referral contacts listed on our pages for specific programs (for example, tuberous sclerosis referrals have dedicated numbers).
What should I expect if I’m admitted to the Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (video‑EEG)?
Most inpatient video‑EEG admissions last about three days but can be extended if needed to capture seizures. You will be monitored continuously (EEG plus room video), may have medications adjusted under close supervision, may have limited mobility while monitored, and will be provided detailed safety instructions (including how to use the event button). Wear button‑down tops if you plan to wear your clothes so electrode disconnection is minimized, and follow the unit’s specific preadmission instructions — the unit team will explain every step.
What patient and family support resources do you offer?
We provide patient and family resources through FACES (Finding a Cure for Epilepsy and Seizures), including support programs, a parent network, temporary FACES apartments for families traveling for care, scholarship programs, nutrition and dietitian services for dietary therapies, and events and education to connect patients and families.
