Our baby Sarosh was admitted to the NICU at Cohen’s Children’s Medical Center after being transferred from South Shore University Hospital due to breathing concerns that required deeper investigetion and specialized care.
Medical care here is top-notch. The level of expertise is excellent, and Fatima and I, always felt our baby was in capable hands. A special shout-out to Dr. Awan and Dr. Xu (ENT residents) for a thorough and reassuring evaluation, and to Dr. Ramdihal (resident physician) for attentiveness and professionalism. Doctors and nurses were consistently present and responsive.
Most of the nursing staff was kind, caring, and encouraged parents to be involved in the babys care. Overall nursing care was strong (8/10). However there were a couple of instances where diaper changes did not appear properly cleaned, which was concerning... an important area for improvement.
The NICU environment felt very crowded. Our room had 8–10 babies with two nurses, and there was no real space for parents to stay with the baby, aside from chairs in a busy room. Compared to SSUH (one baby per nurse, private room, sofa-cum-bed), parent comfort here was a major negative.
Communication was generally okay, our questions were answered, but emotional support felt limited (about 6/10). Lactation support was also disappointing (2/10). Instead of hands-on help and encouragement for breastfeeding, formula was suggested without adequate support, which was frustrating.
A special shoutout to Ronald McDonald House Charities for outstanding support providing food and shelter . they also provided volunteers who helped nurses in an extremely busy setting. Another special shout-out to Shawna Vernisie, the creative arts therapist, whose guitar playing was deeply calming for both babies and parents.
Overall:
• Medical care: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (Top tier)
• Nursing: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ (8/10)
• NICU overall: ⭐⭐⭐½ (7/10)
OVERALL Despite some significant challenges with crowding, parent comfort, and lactation support, the medical expertise here is excellent, and we are grateful for the care our baby received.
Feedback for Hospital Administration:
While the medical expertise is exceptional, there are clear areas that need attention, particularly parent presence and comfort in the NICU, crowding, inconsistent hygiene during diaper changes, and stronger, more supportive lactation services. Parents in the NICU are already under immense emotional stress, and creating space for them to be present with their babies, along with consistent nursing protocols and improved breastfeeding support, would significantly improve the overall experience without compromising medical excellence.
