Over 7 hours in ER. nurse came three times, after shift switch had no idea who the nurse was. They came with meds from tests but no-one came over to even say results came in. They ran all tests and didn’t even go over any of them. Came back with think it was viral. Nurses have too many patients . NEVER coming back.
This hospital saved my parents life, they have great doctors and the respiratory is absolutely amazing !! The team at respiratory is kind and caring. However , the lack of care after you are out of ICU or in the ER waiting area is absolutely disgusting and inhumane. When admitted to the ER waiting room, My parent was left with a high fever and in pain , and they hid the vital signs from us. Patient waited an entire day for a room and treatment and was left with their paralyzed arm dangling off the rails , if it were not for us they would have suffered or passed. They do not listen to nonverbal patients pain queues like facial grimace. Instead of understanding patients may have more pain sensitivity than others, a doctor said BECAUSE IV is a standard routine he cannot give any pain meds. My parent was SCREAMING in pain!! It was so hard to watch! Because they are a dialysis patient , veins are more fragile than others and the doctor simply stared at me while I asked for something to be given while patient gets poked multiple times. Heartless. This happened multiple times where they did not understand not every patient has the same pain tolerance for simple procedures. ALWAYS listen to patients pain! They also left my parent curled up with stool all over their equipment in 4Monti. When I asked for them to clean my parent they did, but left the patients pulse ox and patient hands full of stool, so I cleaned them myself. When they were placed in a different unit, their IV kept beeping (again due to fragile thin veins) and instead of making adjustments and finding a solution, they threw out the rest of their medication saying they were “finished” , thinking we don’t understand IV. Nurse manager did nothing when I asked for assistance. Issues should be documented and solved , not ignored. Patient pain should be listened to , not what you think is painful or not. Pain is subjective and everyone is different. When they stopped eating absolutely no nurse came to feed them. I would walk in with the patients tray completely full and nobody documented these changes. My parent has also been discharged and readmitted multiple times due to issues not being addressed properly … you’re discharging an unwell patient they will just end up coming back. Imagine, I visited everyday. So imagine what they do to your non verbal loved ones when you’re not there. Do better, all patients deserve proper care. Non verbal, complicated , or non procedural, all deserve care.
So, I didn’t know they had specialty clinics (but they do), and I had an appointment on the 3rd floor which was the gynecology and childbirth/labor department. Now, as a dude, I was like, “am I even in the right place?” But there was a really kind lady, I wish I had gotten her name (and I think she was a nurse in the gynecology department) who directed me to my clinic after asking her peers and I appreciate that all the staff were very helpful and willing to take time out of what they were doing to help a lost fella like me.
Now, regarding parking, there is valet parking and there is paid* parking across the street. I think it’s paid for visitors but free for patients (I didn’t have to pay for parking). You drive in and you get a ticket, similar to some shopping centers. Pricing varies depending on how long you stay but and there are license plate scanners so they know your every movement. I think the lowest tier is 30 minutes - 1 hour for $6.
Walking in, the first thing I noticed is how much nicer the hospital has gotten. I was a patient back in 2011 (when I was 4) and while I do believe the doctors and nurses were a hundred times more caring back then, I do think they are still caring about their patients now.
The biggest thing I would change about this hospital are first impressions - let me clarify.
There were two young black girls at the counter when you walk in (one of them managed the line for patients, the other one managed a separate line for visitors). I was waking in as a patient. The young girl that was going to check me in seemed annoyed that I took a tad bit longer to pull out my drivers license, since all patients and visitors need to have their ID’s scanned (varies by age). Why have people that seem angry at people walking in for care?
Needless to say, my doctors were all chill and helpful.
That said, the day-to-day experience can be inconsistent. Wait times—especially in the ER—can be very long, sometimes hours, and communication isn’t always clear. Some patients report feeling overlooked or having difficulty getting updates during their stay.
One thing that stands out about this hospital is its accommodation for Jewish patients, which is important given the large Jewish community in the area. The hospital is generally Sabbath-friendly, with features such as:
- Shabbat elevators (automatic operation, no button pressing)
- Availability of kosher, halal, vegan, blah blah blah food options upon request
Sensitivity to religious observances, including modesty and scheduling when possible
However, like many big institutions, the hospital can feel overcrowded and impersonal at times.
But, despite the negatives, I think this hospital is better than LIJ a few blocks down.
