  I am writing this as an aunt who witnessed the aftermath of a child being subjected to completely unacceptable care at Guthrie Pediatrics Big Flats. My 3-year-old niece was brought in for an acute medical concern involving sudden facial and neck swelling. What should have been a careful, thoughtful pediatric evaluation instead became a traumatic experience for both child and parent. Staff attempted bloodwork and stuck this child repeatedly, around ten times, while failing to access a vein. She was terrified and screaming. There was no timely escalation to a more experienced provider and no decision to stop and reassess. This is not how pediatric blood draws should be handled, especially with a small child. When my sister became understandably upset watching her child be repeatedly hurt, a regional manager intervened to reprimand her for being “disrespectful to staff.” No apology was offered. No accountability was taken. The focus was placed on managing the parent instead of protecting the child. After failing to complete the bloodwork, they told her to go to a hospital but gave no referral, no guidance, and no help coordinating care. To add insult, they documented “child was uncooperative” in the medical record. A frightened 3-year-old reacting to repeated needle sticks is not uncooperative. That language shifts blame and avoids responsibility. There was also unnecessary alarm raised with talk of serious diagnoses despite the child lacking basic symptoms, which caused additional stress for a family already dealing with a sick child and a chaotic visit. As a family member watching this unfold, I am horrified. Pediatric care demands skill, compassion, and sound judgment. What happened here reflected none of those. I would strongly caution any parent considering Guthrie Pediatrics Big Flats to think carefully before trusting them with their child.
