I’ve been wheelchair-dependent for nearly 20 years, so a reliable wheelchair isn’t optional for me. I ordered my new chair in March, and I fully understand that I’m not the only wheelchair user — waiting until August would have been completely fine if the chair had been built correctly.
Instead, it arrived with mismatched push handles and veered hard to the left. Two NSM reps came out and still couldn’t figure out why. After taking it back, they discovered the entire frame was off by 1/16 inch.
It’s now late November, and despite months of patience and reassurance, I still don’t have the wheelchair I need. My local rep has been kind the whole time, but that doesn’t change the fact that this process has taken eight months and left me without functional mobility equipment. This level of delay and quality control failure is simply unacceptable.
Update: new promise is 12/10
Got the chair. It goes straight now, however...WENT TO SIDE TRANSFER AND ARM HARDWARE ASSEMBLED UPSIDE-DOWN!!!
Ridiculous ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS
Too bad we're at the mercy of others

This company once provided reliable service, but over the past year the quality has declined significantly. Promises are made but never fulfilled, equipment is routinely ordered incorrectly, and meaningful efforts to correct those mistakes are nonexistent.
My son has a brand-new Bantam sit-to-stand stander that remains unused because the wrong adaptations were ordered. Despite multiple calls with both the office and the technician, no repairs have been scheduled and no solutions have been put in place.
Additionally, I have spent over four months waiting for a simple replacement screw for my son’s adaptive stroller — a part that is essential for the footrest to function properly. The screw has finally arrived, but now the company cannot schedule a delivery or repair for more than another month. As a result, I have to drive to their office myself just to pick up a single screw that should have been provided and installed months ago.
For a company that serves children with special needs, this level of service is extremely disappointing and unacceptable. I will likely be seeking another provider — one that values their clients and follows through on their responsibilities.

This company has been terrible for the entire time I've been working with them! It is impossible to get in touch with anybody, there is zero accountability, and no effort put forth to make things right. The culture seems to encourage employees doing the absolute bare minimum. If I had another option available, I would absolutely use a different company.

National Seating and Mobility of Whippany, New Jersey completely handled the purchase, through Medicare, of a power wheelchair for me. I am totally handicapped and live in a small apartment in Hoboken, NJ. Through their expert Carlos Collazo, who scheduled my appointment for a physical and chair evaluation with Jersey City Medical Center Rehab, and then Carlos came to my apartment to evaluate my home situation. Working with my primary physician and Medicare, NSM and Carlos, after serious discussion of my handicap and lack of balance, came up with the perfect solution, a Quantum Q6 Edge 3 Stretto Power Wheel Chair. The chair has changed my life and afforded me the freedom of movement that I had lacked. I would like to thank Carlos and NSM for their effort and execution, and would not hesitate to reach out to National Seating and Mobility of Whippany for any further needs. THANK YOU!!!

Frequently Asked Questions About National Seating & Mobility
What makes NSM the preferred choice for obtaining mobility solutions?
At NSM, we are uniquely positioned to search hundreds of sources for the precise components needed to create a chair that is made specifically to meet the needs of each client. Each chair can be designed for maximum comfort and ease and will provide the specific therapeutic benefits prescribed for you by the health care team. But what really sets NSM apart is our approach. We work from the heart, honoring your journey of independence with efficient, friendly attention that puts your interests first. This is our life’s work—to help others move through life—and we take it very seriously.
How can I work with NSM for my mobility needs?
National Seating & Mobility is a member of your rehabilitation health care team. We work with your physician, nurses and therapists to provide a one-of-a-kind mobility solution customized to your needs and preferences. Because we work in a partnership with your health care team, we require a referral from them in order to be your mobility provider. To help ensure your choice of NSM, you should request that your physician and/or therapist select us as your provider of choice.
How long does it take to get a new power wheelchair from NSM?
NSM strives to complete each timeline phase as quickly as possible without compromising any step in the process. Please refer to this page for the full timeline. We appreciate your patience and understanding.
Why must I see a doctor to get a wheelchair from NSM?
Our clients have mobility challenges and are referred to us by therapists and physicians to receive mobility solutions that meets all their unique needs. If you need a wheelchair, your best plan is to talk with your physician or therapist and get a thorough evaluation from a qualified Rehab Technology Supplier (RTS).
What if my medical condition changes?
Contact your local NSM branch and notify us of any changes that may affect the proper fit and function of your chair.
Are there any dangers in using an off-the-shelf wheelchair?
Definitely. A standard or not customized chair can cause more harm than good. People come in all shapes and sizes; their chairs must be designed to fit them. In severe situations, a standard or not customized chair may:
- Cause significant physiological and psychological problems
- Lead to an increase in dependence because it’s not used due to lack of comfort
- Cause pressure sores, or decubitus, due to improper cushioning
- Become obsolete quickly if not configured to “grow with the child”
- Become a major expense to replace or reconfigure, because most funding sources will only reimburse for a new chair every five years.
Do I have a choice of which mobility solutions company to use?
The choice of a wheeled mobility supplier is yours. Discuss your decision with your physician and therapist.
