However, today I had a very disappointing encounter when I walked in for a COVID vaccine. I had received a text from Acme inviting me to walk in for vaccination. Although I already had an appointment at another pharmacy, I cancelled it because I preferred to go to my regular pharmacy where I usually feel more comfortable. The text stated that “anyone under age 65 with health risks are encouraged to get the vaccine.” After checking the CDC website, I confirmed that I have three of the listed health conditions that increase risk. When I told the pharmacist that I would like the vaccine, she replied that CDC does not recommend it for people under 65 unless they have health risks. I explained that I do have health risks, but she continued to repeat—each time in a slightly more elevated tone—that CDC only recommends vaccination for those over 65. This exchange happened five times in front of a line of waiting customers. Because I could not comfortably discuss my health conditions in public and was taken aback by the aggressiveness of her tone, I simply smiled at the people behind me and left. I then walked into another pharmacy nearby, filled out a form without having to share personal health details in front of others, and received my vaccine within five minutes. I do not understand what happened at Acme today. I hope it was not a political statement, but regardless, it was an unpleasant and discouraging experience.
