I wanted to take a moment to recognize & sincerely thank Courtnee, an employee at the Novant Health General Surgery & Bariatrics clinic for the extraordinary care & compassion she showed me during a very difficult time.
On Tuesday, October 7th around 8:30 a.m., I called the Novant General Surgery & Bariatrics clinic. I had recently undergone surgery for a small bowel obstruction with Dr. Christopher Carballo on September 28th, spent 5 days in the hospital, & had been home for 4 days when I began experiencing terrible pain, vomiting, & hadn’t had a bowel movement in 9 days. I didn’t expect anyone to answer that early, but Courtnee did…& her quick actions set in motion the care I needed.
After hearing my symptoms, she immediately consulted with a nurse & advised me to drink magnesium citrate, which is typically followed by a bowel movement. I began vomiting after taking it & continued vomiting for 10 minutes. Fortunately, Courtnee called me back to check on my condition. Upon learning I was still vomiting & still hadn’t had a bowel movement, she quickly spoke to a nurse again & instructed me to go directly to the Emergency Room, reassuring me that the staff there would be expecting me.
Sure enough, when I arrived, they were expecting me just as she said, & I was immediately triaged. A scan showed that I had a partial small bowel obstruction. The next day, while I was still in the hospital, Courtnee personally called to check on me. That call meant so much because she had no obligation to do so; she called purely out of genuine concern.
Courtnee went above & beyond in every sense. She could have easily blown me off as an overly dramatic patient. Her attentiveness, compassion, & proactive approach made an enormous difference in my care & recovery, & the additional 8-day hospital stay getting the treatment I needed. Courtnee truly felt like my guardian angel throughout the first 2 days of that experience, & I was so happy to meet her in person at my follow-up appointment. As soon as I heard her voice when I walked in, I recognized it immediately; it was the same reassuring voice that had guided me through a scary time 2 weeks prior. She’s a green-eyed beauty whose warmth & professionalism shine just as brightly in person.
I hope you’ll share my email with her, her supervisor, manager, the physicians, & especially Dr Carballo at Novant General Surgery & Bariatrics. I want them to recognize how deeply she impacted a patient’s life through her kindness & professionalism. You all have a gem in her!
With heartfelt thanks.
