2 stars instead of one because of one wonderful nurse (Kizzie) and ultrasound technician.
Otherwise would be one star- extremely disappointed by all interactions with midwives so far. I will avoid naming names out of respect, but my interactions have been as follows:
1. First midwife- arrived to appointment EXTREMELY late (my husband and I were waiting for an hour or more after the nurse did the routine check-in), and appeared very flustered. She was completely uninformed about ANY of my most basic personal information, and proceeded to ask the same basic questions I'd already answered to 2 other staff members prior. She rushed through the appointment and I left feeling very unsettled with the poor quality/depth of care. However, I thought, "this is just one of several providers, surely the rest will be better."
2. Second midwife- experience was just "ok." The midwife was dressed in business casual (emphasis on "casual," as in, a sweater and gray jeans), so I didn't even realize until partway through the appointment that she was the midwife (she did not introduce herself upon entering the room). She seemed nice enough, until I asked a question regarding hospital protocol and patient right to consent on a specific procedure; her demeanor instantly changed, and became standoffish and reserved. I clearly got the impression that patients are supposed to just do what they say without asking questions or standing up for themselves at all.
3. Third midwife- worst experience by far. She came into the room (this one did remember to introduce herself), and immediately began verbally berating me over late labs. She was incredibly rude right off the bat, without even asking how I was doing, or trying to establish any sort of patient rapport. I tried to explain that I had called insurance and had been told they may not completely cover labs, and it may cost a few hundred dollars out of pocket. I did not even get to finish my sentence, before she completely cut me off, dismissed my concerns, told me I was wrong (about what my INSURANCE had told ME), and threatened that I would be considered a "noncompliant patient" if I didn't do what I was told. Her tone was not kind, understanding, or reassuring in ANY way; if it had been, the information she provided would have been received entirely differently; I would have felt reassured and happy to comply. Instead she was offensive, rude, dismissive, bullying, and intimidating. She interrupted and talked over me multiple times. Incredibly unprofessional demeanor and poor patient communication skills.
NOT ONLY was the in-person interaction awful, she proceeded to bash me in her visit notes on MyChart- truly unprofessional and unbelievable! She quoted that I had said I "couldn't afford tens of thousands of dollars in lab fees," which is a GROSS exaggeration- I had said (that *insurance had TOLD me*) it would potentially cost several *hundred* dollars. She also listed the options incorrectly (Tricare Prime and Tricare Select offer different coverages, which I tried to explain- she shut me down immediately- and she wrote "remote and select" would be covered regardless); this shows not ignorance, but also lack of listening.
After these experiences, I am strongly considering transferring care to a private midwife provider, who exhibits more actual concern for the patient, patient's baby, and patient's experience. Today's visit truly disgusted me, and I hope the midwife is confronted on the appalling service she provided. I would absolutely refuse to deliver under her care after my experience today, and would feel less than comfortable with either of the others.
