  I'm a family member of a current client. I can say that the contract is not being met. They don't show up some days. They don't clean like they should. They aren't bathing him and each one has their reasons either their too old to do it, they don't bathe men. One time a caregiver said she couldn't bathe him because he didn't have clothes laid out. They have issues with his pet. They were leaving dirty dishes. When you go in they will be sitting on the couch. They leave the wash cloth in the shower when hes done with a bath if they give him one. They have 4 hours to take care of him and they do the absolute bare minimum if that. Lots of excuses as to why they can't do things but it's all in his contract and they simply don't want to do their job. I can't say it's who ever is running it but they have some awful care givers who clearly dislike their job. I mean they don't even want to cook for him. Makes a cold bologna sandwich for breakfast I can promise you he didn't ask for that. You have to want to be a caring person for this type of job. It's very sad to see and I pray maybe his power of attorney can find an individual who can come in and actually care.

  When my father-in-law needed assistance with regular bathing and dressing, an active contract, three hours a day three days a week, was modified by increasing days to five and hours to eight (or 12) per day. It was increased from the minimum that could be contracted. This change was made at the request of the eldest child as she was (illegally) determined to be concurrent Power of Attorney. While neither parent gave their consent for her to make decisions on their behalf, the local Home Instead franchise changed their contact spelled out in the contract to the eldest child and negated their responsibility to be accountable to the person indicated on the contract. In addition to inappropriately changing the contact person for Home Instead services, the local office refused to take any direction from the original caretaker on the contract and defaulted to the power of attorney which was legally faulty. To top all that off, the caretakers created a system to charge for doing laundry. Both adults in the home had extensive wardrobes, as well as a plephora of under garment to demand laundry only once every two weeks. We ultimately discovered that those being cared for were relegated to three changes of clothing, therefore requiring a laundry charge multiple times a week. All of this applies to the franchise in Lexington NC, so it may not ring true for other franchises. And I must add that if you use another franchise or agency you should keep a close eye on what is taking place and don't let reputation give too much confidence. Bottom line, if you have an elder needing care, be sure to stay on top of what is happening.
