I had a deeply disappointing experience with Dr. Jennifer Mitch at Novant that has permanently impacted my trust in this practice.
I scheduled a routine preventive exam. During the visit, I raised a health concern, which I believed was appropriate in the context of a checkup. Afterward, I received a bill reflecting additional services that were not actually performs and classified as non-routine, resulting in out-of-pocket costs that were not covered by my insurance. At no point during the appointment was it clearly explained that discussing a concern could change the billing classification or generate separate charges.
Patients should be able to speak openly about their health without worrying that doing so will unexpectedly turn a covered preventive visit into a costly appointment. Situations like this raise a larger question about compassion in care. Where is the compassion when a patient leaves not only worried about their health, but also facing an unexpected financial burden simply for asking questions?
The administrative process was equally frustrating. I was initially told my insurance was invalid despite it being active. I contacted my insurance provider multiple times myself to verify coverage, and only after I requested that the office contact them directly was the issue addressed. This created unnecessary stress.
Overall, I left this experience feeling unsupported, poorly informed, and surprised by financial consequences that were never clearly communicated in advance. Transparency about billing practices, especially when a visit may shift from preventive to diagnostic, is essential for patients to make informed decisions.
I would strongly encourage anyone scheduling a “routine” appointment to ask very detailed questions beforehand about what topics can be discussed without triggering additional charges - or perhaps go to a different office altogether.
First of all, when I found out I was pregnant, I called this clinic, which was the closest one to my home, to make an appointment with an OB asap, I was told I won’t be seen until I was 8 or 9 weeks pregnant, I explained that it was my first time getting pregnant and I wanted to be prepared and make sure things were going the right way, the front desk woman said pregnant women in the old times had no OBGYN and still survived, no need to see an OB before 8 weeks pregnant.
Second, I had to make an appointment weeks in advance yet ONE day before my scheduled ultrasound, I got a call from the front desk woman and was told that they don’t have technicians for my ultrasound on Fridays /they don’t work on Fridays. I had to delay the scan and reschedule it for another day.
Third, ONE day before one of my appointments, the front desk woman called me and said their doctor Howard recommended me to do an ultrasound scan on my next appointment, which was the next day, I had to request extra time off from work on the same day due to the last minute notice.
Finally, when I was getting my ultrasound done, the technician asked me the first question “this is your third baby, correct?” I was like “what?! No, it’s my first!”. Also, she was verifying my birthday, it turned out that their system had my birthday recorded incorrectly.
Just very unprofessional people working in this clinic, if you want real prenatal care, don’t come here.
