I signed up for an introduction/trial class and was so excited to try this out as I have been looking to enhance my fitness routine. The class I selected was just under 2 weeks from when I enrolled. I received an initial confirmation text message, which is pretty standard, and loved that I received a follow up text from someone asking me to call so they could go over what to bring, what to wear and what to expect. As someone with social anxiety, this was a huge plus for me! I wasn't able to call them right away, so I didn't think much about receiving 2 more texts within the next 24 hours. When I did call, the person I spoke with was incredibly helpful and made me feel even more excited about my intro class! Over the next 3 days, I received 5 more text messages with the exact same message, asking me to call so they could go over what to expect.
It was beginning to disrupt my work and home life, so I called them again to let them know I had already spoken with someone to let them know I was still receiving texts, they said they'd take care of it, and that was that. Apparently not. I honestly lost track of how many times they texted me the exact same message, but I'd say it was at least 10 more times. The day before my class, I received a text asking me to confirm that I was still planning on going to the class, and I responded "Yes". Later that night, I received yet another copy/paste text telling me to call so they could go over what to expect.
The final straw for me was when I received the same text message, again, except this time it was at 7:30 am the morning I was supposed to go to my intro class. As per the TCPA, businesses are prohibited from sending marketing/informational texts outside of the "quiet" hours of 8am-8pm. I responded to the text clarifying that I had already spoken with someone, twice, and that it is really inconsiderate to be texting potential members before 8am. The girl who responded, Amy, was really nice and apologetic about it and explained that it was her first day. This was an immediate turn off for me as it is a VERY strong indicator of poor leadership/management.
The fact that they are having someone reach out, and respond to members/prospective members on their very first day coupled with the complete lack of communication between their employees (I called TWICE, yet continued receiving these texts) and the horrifically excessive text messaging was a glaring red flag that I just couldn't ignore. Not only does all of this give off the impression of poor leadership, but it made me feel like Club Pilates was desperate for new members, which makes me wonder why. If they were truly as great as I had hoped, there would be absolutely no need for such excessive auto-messaging to potential members interested in joining.
Ultimately, I ended up canceling my intro class, which is such a shame since I'd been looking forward to it for nearly two weeks. I am quite confident that had I attended the intro class, I would have been harassed and pressured to commit to a membership or additional classes, and I have absolutely zero interest in that. I use exercise as a way to cope with stress and frustration, not add to it.
I asked Amy to have the manager call me when she came in, and she assured me she would. As of this moment, I have not received any call or correspondence from management. That is the only reason I have resorted to writing this unsolicited dissertation of disappointment.
Do better.
