Beautiful, clean campus and cookies baked by kind hearted volunteers deceive vulnerable families and keep high ups rich. No education or info given by Drs or nurses re the meds being discontinued and the ones they plan to use. Never saw a Dr in the building and the mystery Dr was not available to talk ever. Yanked my grandmas meds at admission and forced her to suffer withdrawals from 3 psych meds that UNDISPUTEDLY cause horrible withdrawals. Withdrawals were not managed with other meds (she only received Ativan every evening days 3-5 and morphine once in the first 3 days), and her symptoms of sheer terror, constant agitation, and inability to sleep were chalked up to "the dying process". When asked for an overview of the dying process or what we could expect, the two separate nurses I asked told me there was a green pamphlet in the room. What's worse, there wasn't one in our room anyhow. They only have FOUR meds available in house despite their location and ease of access. Inhumane. My grandma became paralyzed unable to even move her eyeballs and looked terrified on a drug called versed until it wore off 4 hrs later. It was the first dose of every 4 hrs versed and morphine. We told the nurse she couldn't have that anymore because of the paralysis and asked what we could use instead and she literally snapped "I'm not removing the versed" until we pressed and pressed. A few days later another nurse tells us she's losing the ability to swallow so they will need to use versed instead of Ativan. I inform her of why my grandma can't have versed and that's when I learn they literally only have 4 meds in house, and the only two for anxiety are versed and Ativan. I wanted to know what our options were for my poor literally helpless grandma and she gaslit me and told me I wasn't coping with my grandmas demise, asked if I had a therapist, and told me to spend more time at home and practice self care. On day FIVE when I had first heard her psych meds known to cause severe psychiatric withdrawals were yanked overnight and asked calmly and rationally how we were going to manage her psych withdrawals, I was simply told "they wouldn't do anything unsafe" and she huffed off. Finally, in the last two days, my grandma was so thirsty and uncomfortable along with terrified and frozen. She had morphine only on those days because she risked choking on Ativan and versed paralyzed and scared her further. It was so inhumane to my grandma and traumatic to me. I don't know how to move past this experience. She was the last person to deserve this. Please check out their form 990 on propublica to learn more about what little percentage of their profits they reinvest and what the high ups are compensated.

Gilchrist has a serene environment, and that helps knowing that your love one will have a peaceful transition. The grounds are beautiful with sitting areas surrounded by nature which is the perfect place to help deal with everything that’s happening. The check in and check out system can be a bit much if you are not somewhat computer savvy, but I felt that it added an additional layer of security. This way there is a record of an up to date photo on file and the exact time of entering and leaving the building, leaving no chance for human error. The rooms are very spacious, clean and tastefully decorated, also the video softly playing in the room with the soothing music gave a calming feeling. My loved one looked so much better than he did in the hospital, he was no longer in pain and the main focus was to make him as comfortable as possible, I could now touch him without his face showing that he was in such unbearable pain. The staff was very compassionate and kept me up to date daily with everything that was going on even if there wasn’t any change. They even called me hours before his passing asking if it was okay to give him a shave, they treated him with dignity to the very end. The social worker Angel was truly an angel, she helped me even step of the way and was always available whenever I needed her. I am truly grateful to her because at times I didn’t know which way to turn. The only thing that could had been done better was not to have housekeeping enter the room while family members are present, because this is a intimate and private moment that you are sharing with your loved one which could be the last time that you see them. The employee was very respectful and did ask permission to enter the room, I could had said no but the moment had already been interrupted. However, that does take away from the care they provided from the beginning to the end.
