Most insulting experience! I had an appointment at Columbia Eye Care inside LensCrafters at Columbia Mall (Maryland). Even though I had an appointment, the wait time was very long. The doctor was good, and the receptionist was polite. However, after I had already left the store, they called me to say that my insurance covers either glasses or contact lenses, not both. This was not explained to me beforehand. Since I had already purchased the glasses, I asked them to cancel the contact lenses order since insurance will not cover and it will be almost $300. There was no issue with that, and everything was handled over the phone.
Because I was still in the mall and had paid using Apple Pay, I told the associate who called me that I could come back down and tap my card again to process the refund instead of her manually entering it. The younger associate I spoke with was very helpful and accommodating.
However, when I returned to the store, an older associate at the front desk told me that I had to return the trial contact lenses that were given to me since I was no longer purchasing the contacts from them. This surprised everyone, including the other staff members, who seemed confused by the request. I explained that I was traveling, which is why I needed the trial lenses. The reason I didn’t purchase the contacts from them was because my insurance only covers either glasses or contact lenses, and I knew I could get the same lenses for a lower price at Costco.
Even though I paid for the contact lens exam and related services, the older associate insisted that I return the trial lenses. I asked what would have happened if I hadn’t come back to the store in person, since everything was originally handled over the phone. They said they still would have asked me to come back and return the trial lenses. Both, I and the other associate were surprised by this response. I returned the trial lenses without any further discussion .
Afterward, I checked with other LensCrafters locations and eye care providers, and they confirmed that trial contact lenses are typically not taken back, even if the patient chooses to purchase elsewhere. I have worn contact lenses for many years, and this has never happened to me before. This experience is the main reason for my poor rating.
I purchased glasses from LensCrafters and paid nearly $500 out of pocket in addition to my insurance from the same location ( sales associate was very nice ).
But the Columbia eye care….. this incident was unexpected and unfair. I have since ordered my contact lenses from Costco at a better price. I will not be returning to this location for future eye exams. While the doctor was good, the customer service…. especially given that I paid both insurance and copays was disappointing. The situation was embarrassing and made me feel insulted, especially considering that I did complete and pay for the contact lens exam.
Sometime older associate or anyone who been in the team for a while forget that people should get treated with respect and good services regardless of the circumstances. Wonder if I was broke how would they have treated me!
