- HLHolly LandryJan 29, 20261.0The man Tom who did my manual wheelchair order put it in without any kind of consultation with me, and without any measurments from me at all. They just put in the half assed measurements from my powerchair which ARE NOT as stringent as manual measurements since you don't need to push, and sent it through. I had to call multiple times and ask for specific things I needed for a manual, and it was a fight, like they didn't want to deal with it at all. Tom said "it's *just* a backup chair", as if I don't need to live in the damned thing for months while I await repairs on my powerchair; which has needed them twice now in the two years I've had it. So when the manual showed up months later, it of course didn't fit. It was much too wide, and the handle posts AND tires chafed my arms when I tried to push, The guy who brought it made disparaging remarks, such as "if you wore shirts with sleeves it wouldn't be a problem"...what the...? It was summer. I can't wear cool clothing mid summer so my chair doesn't harm me? I don't think that's very logical, just very judgemental and ridiculous. So I had reject the delivery, and switched to another NSM location (southborough) with less ableist and sexist employees. It still took a year and 7 months from start to finish to get my chair, and a lot of effort and constant pushing on my end to get people to do their jobs. Use NSM at your own mental health risk.

Why must I see a doctor to get a wheelchair from NSM?
Our clients have mobility challenges and are referred to us by therapists and physicians to receive mobility solutions that meets all their unique needs. If you need a wheelchair, your best plan is to talk with your physician or therapist and get a thorough evaluation from a qualified Rehab Technology Supplier (RTS).
What if my medical condition changes?
Contact your local NSM branch and notify us of any changes that may affect the proper fit and function of your chair.
Are there any dangers in using an off-the-shelf wheelchair?
Definitely. A standard or not customized chair can cause more harm than good. People come in all shapes and sizes; their chairs must be designed to fit them. In severe situations, a standard or not customized chair may:
- Cause significant physiological and psychological problems
- Lead to an increase in dependence because it’s not used due to lack of comfort
- Cause pressure sores, or decubitus, due to improper cushioning
- Become obsolete quickly if not configured to “grow with the child”
- Become a major expense to replace or reconfigure, because most funding sources will only reimburse for a new chair every five years.
