Trigger warning: Ectopic Pregnancy, Miscarriage, Emergency Surgery
My experience with Norton Hospital and Advocates for Women's Health put my life in harm's way.
This was my first experience with their OB/GYN department after being a long time patient of Women's First. I was excited to begin prenatal care with them, and was particularly interested in many of the new services and amenities they offer to expectant mothers.
I was admitted to the emergency department on January 13th. After many hours of waiting and running tests (ultrasounds and bloodwork), I was sent home under strict precautions for ectopic pregnancy. The doctor assured me that Norton would be reaching out to me to schedule follow up bloodwork and said I needed to be monitored closely. This was the beginning of a much bigger nightmare, that I feel is largely a result of Norton's negligence and failure to advocate for me, their patient.
They never reached out to me, so I spent the next week trying to get in touch with my doctor at Norton Advocates to schedule appointment. By Friday, almost a week after my visit to the emergency department, they called me back to tell me I could be seen the following Monday.
Upon arrival, I found out that my appointment had never been posted to the schedule. The doctor that I was slated to meet wasn't even in the office, so they matched me with a different doctor, who had no time to prepare for our appointment.
During this visit, I started to experience acute symptoms: stomach pain, nausea, dizziness. Moments later I'm back in the emergency department where I find out that my ectopic pregnancy had ruptured and I would be having emergency surgery.
During my recovery, I experienced some symptoms that were not clearly outlined on the post-op paperwork provided to me. When I followed up to ask questions, I was treated like I was interrupting my doctor's busy schedule. I had to fight again to get an a follow up appointment and the same doctor was barely able to give me any attention. She did not go over any of the operative reports with me, answered a few of my questions and ran out of there. She didn't even instruct me on how to check out so I was left waiting in my exam room to figure it out myself.
The trauma this experience has caused me has been greatly exacerbated by having to rely solely on myself to advocate for quality care. Not once did ANY of the doctors or nurses call to check on me after my surgery. Norton is lacking tremendously in their patient advocacy and after care. When I take my dog to the vet for a teeth cleaning they call to see how he's doing.
If Norton had followed up with me and scheduled my follow up appointment as prescribed by the ER doctor, it is possible that the ectopic pregnancy rupture, a life threatening emergency, could have been avoided. The financial costs are worth mentioning as well 1 visit to urgent care, 2 ER visits, 2 walk in appointments, and 1 visit to the OR have put a tremendous strain on me financially in spite of carrying insurance. I believe some of these visits were avoidable as well had Norton done their job.
