  We thought we were going to get along well here. It was close to home, Staff was friendly and quick to get us in when we needed it. But, after a few appointments they cited a policy where parents can’t come back with their kids. That made me nervous, because I know my child and I know she’s gonna be more anxious without me there, and I like being able to make informed decisions. But, my girly needed to get some teeth fixed. So, I let her go back. She had busted her front teeth previously and after getting them fixed in March, the existing fillings had come undone and needed repair. Dr. Gave me a choice between a veneer style filling and a pin with the filling and asked me to let him know what I chose upon return. When we came to get it done, I had stated I wanted the pin because everything I’ve read is that it’s stronger and less likely to impair the integrity of the tooth. So, I told doc what I wanted and he went back with my child. When he came back he informed me that she was too anxious to get the pin done, she was afraid of the vibration. So he made the decision to do a bonded filling, and inform me after the fact. I waited until I had a calm head to decide how I feel about this. And, though I do believe he made the decision he thought was best, we have not been going to this dentist long enough for me to endorse that he can make decisions without me. I feel like he overstepped, under communicated, and then when he realized that yes, my daughter was going to be more anxious without me, he adjusted the plan of care without speaking with me first. Providers are absolutely entitled to their own policies, but parents are also entitled to an informed consent over their children’s care. I’m really just leaving the review because when I was looking for a dentist it was important to me that I be present, and if there is another mom out there making a choice with the same stipulation, this isn’t the dentist for you. If you are okay with allowing the dentist to have autonomy over the situation, you might like them. When he told me he needs clients to just trust he will make the best decisions while justifying his choice to make a decision without me, it reinforced my desire to find a more collaborative practice to take my child to. *dr Maddox did call me after reading the review to provide further education and the verbiage has been altered to better represent after education was provided. The goal of this review is not to paint him in a negative light but rather to communicate that the process was not as collaborative as I would have liked and inform anyone with the same conviction as I have about parental presence that it does not align with the policy. I do not believe this doctor was acting maliciously or that he caused any harm at this time, I do believe that communication is impaired through this policy.*

  I went to Maddox since I was a little kid and recently started going back there after a short few year period of going somewhere else. I have bad anxiety when I have more than a cleaning done and Dr. Maddox does a great job explaining what he is doing while he is doing it, what will happen next, and checking on me throughout the process. I can’t picture myself going anywhere else anytime soon.
