If you have been told you are needing wisdom teeth removed and are over the age of 25, but don't have cysts then do not waste your time. Before the assistant and surgeon even looked in my mouth or asked me any questions, I was told that wisdom teeth do not need removed if you are over the age of 25 unless cysts have formed. While this is grossly incorrect, this could easily be relayed over the phone.
For background info, im 35 but have always been told my mouth looks younger than my age. I had braces as a kid and was told my wisdom teeth could become a problem later in life and I needed to watch them on my routine dentist visits as I have a very small mouth and they will wreak havoc if they do ever decide to move. I saw my dentist for tooth pain (very back molar). It thought maybe a cavity or TMJ issues. After a panoramic xray, she was confident it was my wisdom tooth. Because her office doesnt do IV sedation, I got 2 referrals so I could choose with oral surgeon location I wanted to go to. This one, Greenwood office, got me in soonest.
When I get back to a room, the assistant immediately tells me that my wisdom teeth are still in the sinuses and they dont need removed but that the dr would come in and talk to me. The doctor comes in and the first thing he says is "We don't do elective wisdom teeth removals." This was BEFORE looking at my mouth or any kind of evaluation. Also, what kind of crazy person wants to undergo oral surgery for the heck of it?!?! ...Not this gal! I was kind of confused at all this, but continued on as he asked me about my symptoms which were back tooth pain and jaw stiffness and pain. He told me I wasn't pointing tot he right area where my wisdom tooth would be and that wisdom teeth dont cause jaw pain! He then went on to tell me that sometimes dentists need to take more time to find out what the real issue is.
The funny part is, he couldnt tell me what the issue was either but he was sure it wasnt my wisdom tooth. He then looked in my mouth and I pointed out an area my tooth that had been swollen a little and tender behind the molar. He said he didnt know what that was, could not see a cavity in the tooth and felt no TMJ inflammation. He told me my only other option was to do a CT scan as there might be a small crack in that tooth that no one can see. This would cost about $300.
I left really confused as everything I was told was different from what my dentist said and other people I know that have had wisdom teeth removed over the age of 25. I opted to go to a different facility and got a very different experience. That surgeon could tell by my xray that my wisdom tooth was doing something, he just couldn't tell how much of my issues were caused by it. After a CT, it turns out that not only was it starting to push through the bone (which Dr Potter said was impossible), but it was going at an angle! Which angle might you guess? That's right, TOWARDS my JAW bone which is what causes the JAW STIFFNESS and PAIN that Dr. Potter said wasnt the cause of my issue.
I am now recovering at home from wisdom teeth removal that was NOT ELECTIVE and necessary. Go to Dr. Lee in Plainfield. It was a great experience. (I'll be reviewing them next)
