Our experience at the IU Health walk-in clinic was disappointing. We had a 9:40 AM appointment and weren’t brought back until around 10:30. I understand delays happen, but nearly an hour behind for a scheduled appointment felt excessive.
What concerned me more was that basic vitals like height and weight weren’t taken. When I asked about it, I was told, “We don’t do that here.” For a 15-year-old patient, that felt surprising and not in line with what I’d expect as standard practice.
Overall, the visit left us feeling frustrated and questioning the level of care and attention to detail.

The doctor spent 5 minutes with my daughter, did no diagnostic test, then told her “you have the cold, the flu, or bronchitis” honestly, I mean duh: we also thought that and that’s why she came to YOU. He gave her no advice about what to do, he listened to her heart and lungs and stated the obvious, then left. Unacceptable “care” in my opinion and hers.

I would never recommend IU Health. This last visit was decent at 1st then turned to demeaning, degrading and dehumanizing. I am a 59 year old, 100% disabled veteran who has had 12 back surgeries and additionally 2 broken backs. I have had many, many other surgeries. I am not some homeless drug addict that they turn their noses up at! (Btw, I have seen some of those people there, and the staff treats them horribly, like they aren't human! Sickening!)
I think I have earned a little respect, a little decency, and the right to keep my dignity and receive great care... which I receive NONE of at IU health and from what I've seen, no one else does either. Avoid if you can, but if you can't make sure you get all names, titles, and take notes. They will do everything possible to avoid you getting to the patient advocate (who is absolutely useless anyway), but keep the names, titles, and take notes for your attorney
Frequently Asked Questions About IU Health Urgent Care - Bloomington
When should I go to an urgent care?
For non-life-threatening conditions that need prompt attention — examples include abdominal pain/stomachaches, allergic reactions, colds/flu-like symptoms, cuts/scrapes/bites, earaches, headaches, fractures/sprains (with x-ray when available), strep/sore throat, sexually transmitted disease testing, sports physicals, upper respiratory infections and urinary tract infections.
What's the difference between urgent care and an emergency room?
Urgent care treats non-life‑threatening conditions that need prompt attention; emergency rooms treat life‑threatening conditions or injuries that could result in permanent disability.
Do you offer sports and camp physicals?
Yes. Urgent Care locations offer sports and camp physicals. If a school or camp specifically requires an MD signature, contact the Urgent Care to confirm an MD will be available.
Do I need to make an appointment?
No. Walk‑ins are accepted. You can also use the site’s “Save a Spot” option to reserve a place in line and reduce wait time.
Do you accept walk‑ins until closing time?
IU Health aims to see patients up until closing, but walk‑ins may be limited based on availability. Use Save a Spot or On‑Demand Virtual Visits if needed.
Is urgent care a substitute for primary care?
No. Urgent care is intended to supplement primary care by addressing immediate, short‑term health needs rather than long‑term health management.
What ages are seen at urgent care?
Patients ages 3 months and older are seen at IU Health Urgent Care.
How much is a typical urgent care visit?
For insured patients, deductible and/or copay is collected at time of service and the insurer is billed; IU Health bills any balance after the insurer processes claims. Self‑pay rates are described as affordable for patients without insurance.
What insurance options do you accept?
IU Health Urgent Care accepts a wide range of commercial, Medicaid, Medicare and VA plans (examples listed by IU Health include Aetna, Anthem/Blue Cross plans, Blue Cross and Blue Shield, CareSource, Cigna, Humana, Indiana Health Network, TRICARE, UnitedHealthcare and others).
What if I don't have insurance?
IU Health states its rates are very affordable for self‑pay patients.
How do I pay my urgent care bill?
IU Health accepts most insurance plans and accepts cash, checks and credit cards. See the IU Health ‘Pay a Bill’ page or call 1.888.IUHEALTH for billing questions.
