I went to Jewel grocery store on 183rd and Kedzie today, July 20, 2025 after church. As I was walking into the store, I noticed an older man leaning his bicycle against the store and grabbing a cart to come inside to shop. As I noticed that he grabbed a cart and his only known transportation at the time was his bicycle, I stopped and went back outside. The bike was not secured and it was just resting on the side of the glass and bricks. I didn't want anyone to steal the bike as there were no security measures on it. I stood alongside it and I patiently waited for the man to come out. I have never seen this man before. My heart was just full of compassion to help as I was able to drive to the store, and he only had a bike. After waiting for thirty minutes, I was concerned and I asked one of the employees if he could assist me. I told him about why I was standing there and if he could watch the bike while I checked into the store to see if the man was alright. As I walked into the store, I noticed the man at the register. I returned outside to tell the Jewel employee that the man was in line and I will continue to wait as he should be coming out soon. In less than a minute, Homewood police arrived and asked me, "what was the problem?" I was confused by the question because I was just standing there next to the bicycle. Once the officer approached me, I recognized his face as one I had greeted twenty minutes prior. I told him why I was there and I even provided my state identification. The officer told me that the employees in Jewel said I was bothering the customers and that I had to leave. I was shocked. I only greeted customers. It is polite to speak to people who walk by you. My conversations were with actual employees. I have lived in this community for almost two decades and I have never had trouble with anyone. If Jewels wanted to know why I was standing there, someone could have asked me, or furthermore spoke with the employee that was aware that I was making sure the bicycle was safe. I was told I could not go into the store once the owner returned and that if I wanted to buy from theJewel grocery store, I must go on Halsted Ave. I am beyond hurt and humiliated. We are supposed to love one other. We are supposed to protect each other. If I had to do it over again, I would still stop and bless someone who obviously couldn't afford security measures for his bike. We must do better as a society with our morals and values. If my neighbor was unable to secure their belongings, I would not leave them vulnerable. I would try to shield and protect their property. I don't want to harm others, by being unwilling to help if I can. It is called community and looking out for one another. I had no intention to even let the man know what was done. I desired no accolades. I just came in peace. I left in peace. Message received and understood. You don't want me in your store. In closing, why were those individuals who were actually soliciting at the entrance not told to leave? They are the ones who were actually engaging with the customers however nothing was said to them. Make it make sense.
