my 80 yr old aunt just moved into a assisted living home. she was in a local nursing home in rehab for a total knee replacement. after a month and a half she had an issue with her mobility chair that was purchased from national seating and mobility company out of champaign. in the past 10 yrs she has had no issues with the company or services provided to the customers. recently they must of had a employee changes and wow not good!! she was having problems the chair was not responding correctly and she accidentally ran into the doorway and 2 residents not to her fault but a chair issue. she had to park it until repaired per facilities instructions. we (her medical poa's) had called immediately to get a tech out. it took almost 2 weeks the company scheduled an hour time slot for repairs. I was unable to meet with the tech at the time. when he showed up he spent 10 to 15 minutes there he tightened the controller told her she needed a new chair and had to call his boss and left. he did not bring in battery tester or any meter testing equipment and why didn't he call the office right there while he was there to give more info.. my aunt was up set and thought it was her fault because he told her that she should have kept it plugged in for 2 month while she wasn't using it. she also thought sinceyou are allowed a new chair every 3 or 4 yrs that she was responsible for a purchase of a new chair. she is required to eat in the dinning hall 2 times a day unless se was ill to stay a resident. she lives on the second floor and the dinning hall is on the first. she is unable to walk the distance. the facility did find a manual chair but due to her age and physical abilities she's unable to meet the requirements of the home... I did call mobility and the tech made no notes on his visit told the secretary that it needs new batteries. I asked the secretary in the champaign office when can we get them replaced. she said it takes 30 to 90 days for approval. I asked if the tech could come on Monday so I can meet up to figure out what was really wrong with the chair she said he only comes out on Thursday to Charleston illinois I ask can he come out on the holiday I was pleading for help she said no we'll we all know that the next 2 Thursdays land on a holiday so I knew the answer all ready I ask to speak to a manager the secretary stated she was on breavment time due to death in the family. im very sorry for their loss I truly am. so I asked is the a standby manager or the one above her because someone has to take the place and help out while the manager was out. she said no I asked can you send whom ever is in charge a email to contact me on Monday that my aunt is in a bad situation and needs some help. she told me to call back!!! she also told me if i want my aunt chair to have new batteries to have go buy some!! then she instructed me that if I kept the chair plugged in for 2 month her batteries wouldn't be dead. I told I want to speak to a manager now she decided that she was going to hang up on me instead!!!! I hope any one who reads this will take their business elsewhere and fire both employees immediately to treat a disabled person like that and leave them stranded.. all I got to say is God bless their heart from the southern man!!! and hope they get to enjoy their holidays because my beautiful amazing aunt will definitely have the best one she can because I will make that happen..... if you wonder whom I am the 2 employees responsible definitely does!!!!! Can Keep Your Power Chair Plugged In Cause Issues?
Charging your power chair is key to keeping it running well. But how and for how long you charge can harm the battery. Knowing the risks of charging power chairs is important for keeping them in good shape. per manufacturer info just Google it you might learn something if you want to be a tech instead of a secretary maybe you should get educated before telling people how to take care of equipment and I think the tech needs to go to tech school again and try reading instead of using chat gpt!!!!!

Why hand your business card out and say just give you a call if I have any questions if you don't answer or return calls? Called about a month ago and was told NSM was waiting on the return of a prior authorization they'd sent to my insurance company before moving forward. Nothing was ever sent to my insurance company. So I'm sitting here waiting for a power chair that's never going to get here! PS this began in August I believe.

We have been trying to get my sisters wheelchair fixed for months now I finally called and was told two weeks for insurance and 2 weeks for parts then they call to schedule repair and this is for every work order it seems her chair is never really fixed before other issues occur and takes months to even get a repair. It’s crazy ! Now her controller arm is completely off and she has no way to get around. It’s sad she has to stay in her apartment for months waiting on all the repairs 🥲

They were so helpful, and Kiada was so wonderful and friendly. She helped me get my chair in time for our trip. Also the young man that helped us get the chair into the car was so nice and helpful

How can I work with NSM for my mobility needs?
National Seating & Mobility is a member of your rehabilitation health care team. We work with your physician, nurses and therapists to provide a one-of-a-kind mobility solution customized to your needs and preferences. Because we work in a partnership with your health care team, we require a referral from them in order to be your mobility provider. To help ensure your choice of NSM, you should request that your physician and/or therapist select us as your provider of choice.
How long does it take to get a new power wheelchair from NSM?
NSM strives to complete each timeline phase as quickly as possible without compromising any step in the process. Please refer to this page for the full timeline. We appreciate your patience and understanding.
Why must I see a doctor to get a wheelchair from NSM?
Our clients have mobility challenges and are referred to us by therapists and physicians to receive mobility solutions that meets all their unique needs. If you need a wheelchair, your best plan is to talk with your physician or therapist and get a thorough evaluation from a qualified Rehab Technology Supplier (RTS).
What if my medical condition changes?
Contact your local NSM branch and notify us of any changes that may affect the proper fit and function of your chair.
Are there any dangers in using an off-the-shelf wheelchair?
Definitely. A standard or not customized chair can cause more harm than good. People come in all shapes and sizes; their chairs must be designed to fit them. In severe situations, a standard or not customized chair may:
- Cause significant physiological and psychological problems
- Lead to an increase in dependence because it’s not used due to lack of comfort
- Cause pressure sores, or decubitus, due to improper cushioning
- Become obsolete quickly if not configured to “grow with the child”
- Become a major expense to replace or reconfigure, because most funding sources will only reimburse for a new chair every five years.
Do I have a choice of which mobility solutions company to use?
The choice of a wheeled mobility supplier is yours. Discuss your decision with your physician and therapist.
