On a whim I enrolled in a free intro class and with a push from my friend actually showed up for it --even though I had no intentions of enrolling in a membership (it's a 20 min. drive both ways and not going to lie pretty pricey!) However, I LOVED it and signed up immediately afterwards, committed to do lots of classes to make the monthly fee worthwhile.
Now, one month later, I book as many classes as I can fit around my 8-5 workday. It can be a challenge to get into classes because of the limited number of reformers, the hours of operations and the amount of members trying to get in. They offer levels of classes so you can begin and progress with a group of people at similar skill/strength/experience, but sometimes that means the level I'm in isn't available when I am. Luckily, I can book classes at the Ankeny or WDM location, so I usually find enough availability to meet my weekly goals. But I'm hoping they may expand their hours and rumor is another studio will be opening in/near downtown Des Moines this year which would be an easier location for me.
I immediately fell in love with pilates in that Intro class. It feels like a combination of yoga, ballet/Barre, and body strength workouts. I am still level 1.0 and take the flow or center & balance courses, which are gentle slow movements focused on breath, form, and control of the muscles. The apparatus and props take this all to another level beyond the pilates I used to try in average gym classes. Not to mention the instructors at this studio are all incredibly welcoming and supportive! They all seem like genuinely happy people who can make a joke and not be toxically positive or intensely demanding of perfection. I am midsized, and mid 30's but I feel perfectly comfortable and not scrutinized by anyone, it's a great mix of ages, bodies, genders.
I can tell physically my body is stronger, and after 15 classes I could visibly see a difference too. I am so glad I tried the intro. class and bit the bullet to get an unlimited membership. This is the most positive and committed fitness experience, I've ever had.
