I have a young child who is afraid of the dentist and cries with the invasiveness of dental procedures. Each time I sat with her and help hold her hand or rub her leg to help calm her so she won’t try to leave the seat. One visit ruined every previous positive about this place.
Jana led us to a tiny back room the male dentist and a female assistant. There was no explanation of what was about to happen. I had to stop them and ask, saying it would be an application of a dental liquid, which the dentists explained to me in the past. I had to ask for the clarification (but received it). Without warning, Jana pinned her whole body on my 30 pound child. One female assistant held her head, the dentist applied the treatment, while Jana restrained her. It was an overstimulating experience for both of us. Jana was saying, “Stop! You’re fine!” She was extremely rude in the way she spoke to my child. Jana had no patience or empathy and berated my child (the dentist, as supervisor, did not say anything to Jana). I was upset that Jana restrained my child without my consent.
I can understand gently holding a child’s arm to prevent them from touching their mouth. I was there, I should be the one holding my child. It was worse because she pinned her down with a full body hold leaning her arm and hip on her applying her full torso and body weight, with her legs spread out on the ground for more leverage. I was so shocked and appalled I wanted to stop the procedure but there was so much going on. How could you restrain my child without my consent? If a child is resisting, the first thing is to ask the parent to intervene and help hold the child still, if the parent desires. Next step if it escalates is to inform the parent that staff cannot perform the procedure and if the parent wants to stop the appointment and leave without the service, or if the parent or staff can perform appropriate restraint. You should never restrain a child, especially full body pin down restrain a tiny 30 pound child, without parental consent (I did not sign a consent form approving restraint). I am upset even months later.
Update: despite the anonymous post, they confronted us at a later appointment. There was no apology. I was told [through this review] I “attacked” staff, and we were blamed. The dentist had been working with my child over time and had been great and nice to my child during former visits (a positive note 👍), but the one experience with the one nurse warranted the review. All other experiences, Dr did explain treatment beforehand (a positive 👍). Not sure if it was a busy day for them, but the experience with Jana, and the confrontation regarding our experience is unforgettable. It’s a bummer my privacy was breached to get my identity. Being blamed/gaslit was the result. I hope you don’t have the same experience we had. On a good day, dentist is great. Unfortunately, our one experience with Jana was not. Hopefully it was an off day for her as well and she isn’t usually like that.
