We have been members of the Newbury David Lloyd club for a while now, and overall we have had a positive experience, especially as a family with young children.
The club has a large free car park, and we have never struggled to find a space. Compared with other David Lloyd clubs we visited, the management at Newbury seems particularly strong. The general manager appears to run the club very well, and overall the atmosphere feels organised and welcoming.
The facilities are extensive and generally very well maintained. It is also a good place for remote working.
The gym is modern, spacious, and equipped with good quality equipment. The personal trainers have always been friendly and approachable, and the separate studios for classes are excellent.
One of the biggest positives for us is how family-oriented the club is. The soft play area and outdoor playground are nice, and compared with some other clubs, Newbury seems to attract many families, which creates a lovely atmosphere if you have children yourself.
The wellness area is also very nice, not too large, but a perfect size for relaxing a little while.
The changing rooms are spacious, and the dedicated family changing room is a great idea.
The café and bar offer fairly decent food at reasonable prices, without the inflated pricing you sometimes expect in places like this.
Staff throughout the club are consistently polite and helpful.
The app deserves a mention too. It is not only useful for bookings and checking timetables, but also excellent for tracking workouts, gym programmes, and other fitness-related features.
The lifeguards generally do a good job, and I particularly like the constant rotation system they use. It is clearly a boring role, so rotating staff helps them stay alert. Most lifeguards are attentive and professional, although occasionally some become distracted chatting to each other, which is not ideal when the pool is busy with children.
There are however a few areas where improvements are needed.
Cleanliness, particularly in the café area and generally around the club. The cleaning staff who are there work hard, especially one of the older ladies with dark hair who is excellent, but there simply are not enough cleaners for the size and busyness of the club.
Another disappointment has been the children’s pool availability. One of the main reasons we joined was because we were specifically looking for a warmer pool for our toddler. Unfortunately, the warmer children’s pool is occupied by swimming lessons much of the time, which significantly limits access for families.
Finally, while this is not specific to the Newbury club itself, David Lloyd’s sales approach and lack of transparency leave a bad impression. We experienced exactly the same sales tactics at several clubs, so this seems to come from higher up rather than local management. Tours focus heavily on the positives whilst avoiding less convenient details. There is strong pressure to sign up immediately with joining fee discounts, but very limited explanation about cancellation policies or pausing memberships. Unless you take the contract home and read everything carefully, you are effectively signing without fully understanding the terms.
The initial 12-month contract, especially at around £350/400 per month for a family of four, feels unnecessarily inflexible. (You can just pause it and still pay 25% of the fee). We are happy to pay premium prices for good-quality facilities, but greater flexibility would likely improve long-term customer loyalty significantly.
