Disgraceful customer service – inventing unwritten rules to breach their own contract
If you are thinking of joining David Lloyd Edinburgh Shawfair, be warned that they do not honor the contracts they write.
I requested a standard membership suspension under Section 13a of the terms and conditions because I am traveling abroad for two months. According to their own contract, a suspension can ONLY be denied if the club has an active "waiting list."
When I requested it, a sales person called me to verbally refuse, claiming they have a "waiting list" and that new members can't start until late June. However, I checked their live website, and the joining portal was wide open, actively accepting brand-new members with full payments starting from 1st June.
When I pushed back, Member Support admitted in writing that the "waitlist" only applies to prospective members, and they are actively taking on new memberships to replace people leaving. They then invented an unwritten rule, claiming they cannot accommodate pauses for "convenience purposes"—something that is completely made up and explicitly contradicts Section 13a of the signed contract. I am completely fed up with the stressful back-and-forth and am now reporting this matter to Trading Standards Scotland for formal investigation.
They use high-pressure phone calls to confuse members and aggressively protect their sales targets instead of honoring legal consumer contracts. For a "premium" club charging premium prices, their customer service and business ethics are utterly shocking.
Save your money and go somewhere that actually respects its members and its own legal agreements.

I am disappointed with how my recent membership suspension request was handled.
I contacted the club due to medical reasons and requested a temporary suspension, as I had done previously in December. On that occasion, the request was handled smoothly, and my child’s membership was allowed to remain active. However, this time the same situation was approached very differently, with no flexibility shown.
Despite raising this, I was not provided with any clear explanation, reference to policy, or reasoning as to why the previous arrangement was possible, but this time it could not be considered.
The app also did not allow me to select February as a start date, which meant I had to choose March, even though this was not my intention. This limitation was explained, but no adjustment or practical solution was offered.
I was also given unclear and inconsistent explanations regarding my child’s membership. My daughter only attends supervised swimming and tennis lessons and does not access the club independently, yet this was not properly taken into account.
Overall, the experience felt inconsistent and lacking transparency. I hope this feedback helps improve clarity, fairness, and consistency for other members in similar situations.

We have a very informative tour and discussion with Ashleigh. She listened to our needs and answered all our questions. We did not feel at all pressured and that was appreciated.

Had a tour with Catherine—she was friendly and easy to talk to, and gave a clear, informative overview. The facilities look great and the staff all seemed super friendly. Planning to join when we move to the area.
