This is one of the worst gyms in Birmingham for the price. If it were possible, I would rate this club zero stars.
David Lloyd Birmingham is absolutely not worth the premium pricing. Prospective members should seriously consider alternative gyms, as I have used far better commercial gyms at around £25 per month that offer superior facilities, maintenance, and overall experience.
One of the most immediate and ongoing issues is overcrowding. The club is consistently over capacity, with far too many members being allowed to sign up. This completely removes any sense of a “premium” experience and instead makes the gym feel like a standard commercial facility. The overcrowding has also resulted in a major parking problem. The car park is regularly full beyond capacity, forcing members to drive around for extended periods waiting for a space. On several occasions, I have had to circle the car park for up to 10 minutes before finding a place to park.
As a result, many members and guests are forced to park on double yellow lines along the road and even on grassy areas outside the gym. This presents a clear health and safety concern, obstructing roads and pedestrian areas. The fact that this continues despite being obvious evidence of overcapacity suggests poor management oversight. Instead of addressing this issue, the club continues to run promotional offers to attract even more members.
As a Platinum member, towels are provided on entry. However, these towels are frequently unclean and visibly stained, which is unacceptable and unhygienic, particularly for a premium facility.
The condition of the gym equipment is equally disappointing. Much of the equipment is clearly old, worn, rusted, and outdated. Treadmills are frequently broken, and during recent visits, more than half of them have been out of order for weeks at a time. For the price of membership, this is entirely unacceptable, and it raises serious questions about the effectiveness of maintenance and repair processes. Even the body composition and scale machine is unusable approximately 75% of the time.
Temperature control within the gym is extremely poor. The environment is often uncomfortably hot and humid, and the air conditioning system appears old, ineffective, and poorly maintained. There are visible leaks from the system, leaving wet patches across the gym floor, which again raises health and safety concerns.
The most serious and unacceptable issue, however, is the condition of the changing rooms and showers. There has been no effective extraction or ventilation in these areas for weeks, leading to excessive humidity and condensation. This has resulted in the growth of mould throughout the ceiling and surrounding areas, which is both unhygienic and potentially hazardous to health. Despite management being made aware of this issue, the mould has not been properly cleaned or resolved. A small, low‑quality extraction fan has since been installed, but it is clearly ineffective, as the area remains heavily steamy and damp even after installation.
What makes this even more frustrating is the apparent misallocation of investment by management. Funds have recently been spent on new patio doors and new carpet in the club room, an extremely poor decision given the far more urgent issues surrounding broken equipment, outdated facilities, and mould‑affected changing rooms. Investment should have been directed toward essential repairs and a full refurbishment, not cosmetic upgrades.
Overall, I am extremely dissatisfied with this club and will not be renewing my membership unless a full refurbishment is undertaken, similar to what other David Lloyd clubs have received. This is by far the oldest, most outdated David Lloyd gym I have visited, and it is in serious need of attention, proper maintenance, and responsible management.
