1 star Something got stuck under my contact lens, and I couldn’t remove it. My eye became extremely red, and I was in severe pain. I went to the reception and asked for help. The first thing they asked was whether I was a customer. I said no, and they refused to help me in any way. I wasn’t asking for free treatment—I just needed some assistance because I was in obvious pain. Instead, I had to run to Boots, where the staff immediately tried to help me. Update for the owner: this happened yesterday, 27/06/2026, at approximately 16:00. I was wearing all-white clothing and black trainers. I do not need anything from you. I am providing the exact time so you can check the cameras and confirm that I was there. It is shocking to come to an optician with an eye problem and receive no help, especially when the shop was empty and there were no other customers. The pain was severe, and because of it I also had a headache and felt bad dizzy.

Everybody I spoke too was lovely. I was seen by 3 people and all 3 were kind and helpful. The store was very busy but every thing seemed to be under control

I was able to make an appointment very easily and quickly. From the start I was treat with courtesy and any questions were answered fully showing a high level of competence and customer relation. I was quickly attended for a pre test session and then by Josh who explained everything that was going on with my eyes and showed me how my eyes had changed since my last test. I was given every possible test you can think of and all checks and adjustments were repeated where necessary until I was sure of my answers, there was no rushing or feeling that it was just a formality, I think if I had needed to then I would have been given the whole consultation again from that start if I was not happy with the result before going to choose frames, I have very rarely come across that attitude in the latter years as everyone is in a fast turnover world now, but not Josh, the client is more important than the time. I came away feeling that I had been treat like a friend and an important visitor rather than just another customer. My new glasses were ready in under 2 hours and I got styles for both pairs that were well suited to my tastes, walkouts and sunglasses for a price that is low for the high quality of the stylish frames and the anti reflective lenses. The centre is clean and well set out, from the moment you walk in you feel that it is right, both upstairs and downstairs receptions are manned by smartly dressed staff who are of a pleasant persona. A smile makes a good start in any type of medical or retail environment and you immediately feel more at ease about your worries over your sight whether large or small. Since the branch has been open I have seen it progress and add new machines and technology over the years and I feel that I would be happy to recommend Specsavers Hanley branch to anyone.

I had a very disappointing experience at Specsavers during my recent eye test appointment. From the beginning, communication was extremely poor. The first staff member took me upstairs and sat me in front of a machine without explaining what it did or warning me that there would be a bright flash. Naturally, I blinked when it happened, and then I was told we had to repeat it because I blinked. A simple explanation beforehand would have avoided that entirely. After that, I was moved between different parts of the test with very little guidance about what was happening or whether we had finished one stage or moved onto another. The whole experience felt rushed and confusing. I was also asked twice whether I had brought my computer glasses with me. I explained both times that nobody had told me to bring them. Although staff initially said it was “fine,” I was later reminded at the end to make sure I bring them next time, which only added to the confusion and made me feel as though I’d done something wrong despite never being informed beforehand. The most upsetting part, however, was the tone used during the eye test itself. The optometrist was switching lenses very quickly, to the point where I became overwhelmed and had to ask her to slow down. When I explained that both images looked blurry to me, she responded in a condescending tone: “Yes, Sabrina, they are blurry for everyone. What I’m asking is which one is less blurry.” Later in the appointment, I was told that I apparently do not need glasses for computer use, despite having worn them for many years. I was understandably confused and simply asked questions so I could better understand what had changed. The response I received was: “I don’t know how else to explain it to you, you don’t need glasses for the computer.” At that point, I felt spoken down to rather than helped. I even had to say there was no need to be rude. After that, the tone suddenly shifted and I was told I had “beautiful healthy eyes,” but by then the damage had already been done. I understand that eye tests are routine for staff, but patients are still people. Clear communication, patience, and basic kindness make a huge difference. Unfortunately, the overall experience felt cold, dismissive, rushed, and lacking empathy, and I left feeling genuinely upset.
