I originally attended the store on 6th June for an eye test, where I was told I had dry eyes and purchased eye drops. When I got home, I realised the eye drops hadn’t been included with my purchase, meaning I had to make another journey back to the store to collect them. I also had to pay for my eye test despite having a Blue Light Card, which states that a free eye test is included with contact lenses. I have always worn glasses but wanted to try contact lenses for the first time. I was advised that the lenses would be in stock within one to two weeks. After two weeks had passed with no update, I contacted the store myself and was told they still hadn’t arrived. A few days later they finally came in, and I was booked in for a fitting on 7th July. During the appointment, the optician inserted the lenses but immediately realised the prescription was incorrect and needed changing. Despite knowing they were the wrong prescription, I was still sent home with them to trial for a week. By the following morning I had removed them because my vision was so poor that I couldn’t see properly. I contacted the store to explain what had happened but never received the promised call back. At my follow-up appointment a week later, I explained that I wasn’t confident putting the lenses in myself as I was completely new to contact lenses. Despite this, I was left to insert them on my own. When I opened the packaging, I noticed one of the lenses was folded over. I managed to unfold it using the solution and my fingertip before inserting it, assuming this was acceptable as I had never worn contact lenses before. After later researching it myself, I discovered that a damaged or misshapen lens should not be inserted into the eye. My left eye immediately became extremely irritated and my vision was still poor but the optician told me to wait 5 mins so my eye could adjust. The optician initially told me there was an eyelash on the lens and asked me to remove and reinsert it. After checking again, she realised it wasn’t an eyelash at all and the lens itself was damaged. I had already informed another member of staff that the lens was bent when I opened the packet, yet I was then told it was likely caused by my fingernails, which simply wasn’t the case. I was then informed that another set of lenses would need to be ordered. The optician also commented that my eyes were “very dry” and, after asking which eye drops I had been using, advised that dry eye is a chronic condition. This left me questioning why I had been encouraged to proceed with contact lenses in the first place if my dry eyes were considered significant enough to cause ongoing problems. By this stage, I had completely lost confidence in the process and decided I no longer wished to continue with contact lenses through Vision Express. Since returning home, my eye feels as though it may have been scratched. If it hasn’t improved by tomorrow, I will be seeking a second opinion from another optician. I have been a loyal Vision Express customer for many years, but unfortunately this experience has been extremely disappointing from start to finish. Poor communication, repeated mistakes, lack of support for a first-time contact lens wearer, and what I feel was inadequate clinical judgement have left me with no confidence in this store. Sadly, this will be my first and last experience at this branch, and I will not be returning.
