Really terrible experience at Virgin Active Islington's reformer Pilates class with Katalin Szervo. I attended a beginner's foundation class and a lot of the things she was talking about were new to me. I tried to ask her for help multiple times but she simply ignored me. She was very attentive to the other members (who looked different to me). She was very rude when I asked her for help and snarkily remarked that I shouldn't be doing Pilates without knowing how to do XYZ (I had zero experience with this prior to this class as the Moorgate branch has a different reformer bed). On top of the rudeness and possible discrimination, the class was taught very poorly. It felt very rushed and her instructions were very vague, leaving everyone in the class very confused and slow. I don't know if there has been any negative feedback about this specific instructor but I hope the team looks into this.

I’ve been a member since 2020, six years in and this club has lost its appeal while the price keeps climbing. Customer service is the worst part. There used to be a direct contact number to reception. Now you're stuck with head office only with whichever number you can find online. However, those web chat and phone agents can't actually help. They always say they need to escalate to a manager, nobody logs the context, so you repeat the whole issue every single time. Cases get closed before anything's resolved, then you wait days for another useless reply. The contract terms are super sneaky. Every previous year I was asked for explicit consent to renew for another 12 months. This year they flipped it, no response from you now means you're auto-renewed. I was abroad when they sent the email so missed it (and the subject line is “A reminder about your…”, which, with all other marketing emails they send, is so easy to miss…). I got auto-renewed without giving consent, and it’s impossible to access my prior/new contract or T&Cs anywhere. It took rounds of phone calls to the head office for them to share a contract I signed last year, in which there buried a line about auto-renewal… Such a sneaky way to lock in members! How desperate… The gym itself needs some major updates. Equipment is rusty, machines get stuck, cable machine attachments are missing or broken, and for a "luxury" club the range is shockingly limited. You can’t even find the chest fly machine! Female changing room is the worst part in my view. Broken lockers, stains and dust everywhere, and crucially, the showers smell like pee! Do better… The shampoo and conditioner are also cheap and poor-quality, which, compared to urine-smelling showers, probably is not that much of a deal… Member etiquette needs management too. I picked up a mat left drenched in someone’s sweat… so disgusting. To be fair, the receptionists and class coaches are genuinely lovely. But the club and head office really need some proper rework. Angel is my home club, but I’ve been going to the Moorgate branch more frequently now, and it’s much better in equipment and cleanliness…

SAVE YOUR MONEY!! Ive had paitience with this place but after 3 years at this gym i am cancelling my gym membership. This place is falling apart. It is not WORTH the money. The gym floor is already small they have classes on the gym floor right in the middle of the busiest times, which means less space to work out and the gym floor becomes overcrowded!!! then there’s no mats to use because their being used in the class it just doesn’t make any sense. It would make sense to have more mats for the people that are not in the class. I recently caught a guy recording me whilst stretching, i reported it at the front desk and all the lady said was “okay” no CONCERN whatsoever she never asked any questions or asked if i was okay. No reassurance to make sure that it doesnt happen again. It was just “okay”. Unacceptable. There’s ALWAYS leaks. They continue classes when theres leaks as you can see in the pictures. Leaks on the gym floor, leaks in the bathrooms.Machines not working ever so often, if you want to take your fitness journey seriously just dont bother. It is soo outdated for the amount you’re paying. The equipment is falling apart, rubber on the weights are falling off and they’re rusty.. It’s just not worth the money. There’s never anyone supervising the gym floor to help newbies with the machines or just to make sure of safety to show that there’s someone close by to help. Everytime i go to the spa area people have their phones taking phone calls etc. when theres signs saying “no phones” but again staff are not supervising!! People are noisy in the spa area having loud conversations and no one is there to say anything.. Considering its a child friendly gym there is SO much nudity in the womens changing room, especially when mothers have their young boys in there, they just dont care they walk around completely nude. Drying their hair completely nude infornt of the mirror, you just dont know where to look there’s just no decency. Maybe it cannot be controlled but it’s just another of my 13th reasons.. The whole place just needs a strip down and start again.
