I've been a member of Virgin Active Crouch End for many years. While customer service has often been inconsistent and some of the equipment is showing its age, the current issue is much more serious. The club relies on air handling units rather than air conditioning. Since the refurbishment in the spring, the ceiling ventilation also appears to have stopped working properly. During the recent heatwaves, the gym floor, Reformer Pilates studio and changing rooms have all been extremely hot and poorly ventilated, with temperatures reaching up to late 20s°C. On my last visit, I had to leave after only a few minutes because I felt close to passing out from the heat. Exercise generates body heat, so maintaining a suitable temperature is essential for a safe and comfortable gym environment. These conditions make exercising extremely uncomfortable and could increase the risk of heat-related illness for some members. Virgin Active markets itself as a premium health and wellbeing brand, but these conditions fall well short of that standard. I asked whether the membership fees could be reviewed while the gym is effectively unusable during hot weather, but the club manager told me that head office had refused. What disappoints me most is that Virgin Active acknowledges there is a problem yet continues to charge full membership fees without offering any reduction or meaningful solution. Until effective cooling is installed, I cannot recommend the Crouch End club to anyone who expects to be able to use their gym comfortably throughout the summer.

After being a member of many Gyms over the years I know the difference between good and bad ones. Crouch End Virgin is by far the best Gym I have been a member of. The people and facilities are just Top Notch.

Recent refurb of the gym looks good, nice new equipment and better use of the floor space than previously. But they need to do something about the air conditioning in there, it's been like a sauna recently. How can you do an entire refurbishment, hike the prices up and still not install proper AC on the gym floor?

30 degree heatwave and no AC. Everyone sweating and I don’t feel the difference outside and inside the gym. I have other gym membership in another city, which I pay £25, and they have full AC during any day above 23 degree. I’ve never in my life seen a gym without AC. Calling themselves premium. Honestly this needs to be fixed asap as we will continue to have heatwave.

I am a former member of this branch who had to terminate my contract due to a severe breach of professional conduct by an instructor. I had no personal relationship with this individual. Women must be safe in fitness environments. A member's right to say no must be respected, especially by professionals employed by the gym. Unfortunately, this company's priority is protecting its corporate assets rather than ensuring transparent accountability. No meaningful regulatory or professional boundaries have been established by the club. The handling of my formal complaint by Virgin Active highlighted several systemic failures: Conflict of Interest: Central customer relations initially deflected the issue, angling to route a sensitive harassment complaint back to the local branch product manager who works directly alongside the fitness team in question. Minimisation of Misconduct: Corporate communication attempted to reframe a serious public harassment issue as merely class delivery and programme-related concerns. Lack of Gym Floor Coverage: The corporate data privacy team formally confirmed to me that they do not operate any CCTV cameras on the open gym floor at this location. While this protects general privacy, consumers must understand that if an employee breaches professional conduct or harasses a member on the open gym floor, there is zero visual data preserved. The corporate investigation defaults to a "your word against theirs" scenario, which inherently protects internal corporate assets rather than member safety. Lack of Regulatory Verification: Upon checking professional credentials, I established that the instructor involved was not registered with CIMSPA, the sector's regulatory body. Contract Termination Delays: Despite several clear requests to terminate my membership immediately due to their breach of contract, the company delayed the termination process for over two weeks before finally stopping the billing. Management has now concluded their internal investigation. True to corporate form, they issued a generic response refusing to divulge any specific details or outcomes. They have used internal confidentiality to avoid providing transparent confirmation of accountability, while the trainer remains fully active on the schedule. Anyone can verify this continued active deployment on the public Crouch End timetable. Prospective members should know that when professional boundaries are crossed here, internal bureaucracy and asset protection take priority over neutral, victim-safe standards. PREEMPTIVE NOTICE TO CONSUMERS: Prospective members reading this should expect the corporate brand team to post a standard, polite response below asking me to discuss this privately or claiming they prioritize safety. Please recognize this as a routine public relations tactic. The internal corporate review into this matter has already officially concluded. Management has already flatly refused to provide transparent confirmation of accountability, citing internal confidentiality guidelines, while keeping the individual fully active on the Crouch End class timetable. Do not be misled by a sympathetic public reply; the company has chosen to protect its operational assets over establishing clear safety boundaries. No further private communication is necessary as the factual timeline is fully complete.
