  I joined Virgin Active Aldersgate over the weekend and went to train on Sunday. At reception, a staff member asked me to sign the contract on an iPad. As the Lift Club class I wanted to attend was about to begin, she kindly told me to join the class and said they could take my membership photo when I left. When I finished, reception was very busy, so I asked whether I could have the photo taken on Monday instead. She said that was fine. I returned on Tuesday. A receptionist, Gabay, gave me a sign-in card and took my photo, but then asked me to provide my bank account details at the desk. I explained that I had already set up the direct debit online and did not feel comfortable giving my banking details again in an open reception area. She told me I would not be allowed into the gym unless I provided them. I asked if I could complete my 45-minute workout first and resolve the administrative issue afterwards, but she refused. I explained that I was a paying member with a signed contract. I eventually entered the gym, but another staff member approached me while I was using the leg press and instructed me to return to reception. At reception, the manager said that some information was missing from their system. I explained that this appeared to be an internal administrative or software problem, and 100% their problem, rather than something for which a paying customer should be prevented from training. The manager eventually allowed me to continue my workout. However, as I was leaving, another member of staff again insisted that I provide my banking details at reception. Unfortunately, this was not my first similar experience. A few weeks earlier, I visited using a guest pass from a friend. The same receptionist initially told me that I could not train unless my friend was present, even though I had previously used a guest pass alone. She asked the manager who said I could train alone, but then made me repeat personal information—including my name and date of birth—that I had already submitted online! I understand that staff have procedures to follow, but customers should not repeatedly be inconvenienced because the gym’s systems contain incomplete information or because procedures are being applied inconsistently. I joined the gym to train, not to spend my limited time resolving internal administrative problems at reception! Virgin Active Aldersgate needs to improve its membership system, train staff better, and handle sensitive banking information more appropriately. This was an unnecessarily frustrating welcome for a new paying member.

  Just popped in. Relatively small compared with the Mayfair location. No Kuai bar and reduced facilities.

  Very disappointing experience after several years of being a member. I accidentally left my sunglasses in the changing room and returned less than two minutes later, only to find they had already been stolen. While I accept it was my mistake to leave them behind, it’s shocking that this can happen in a premium gym like Virgin Active. Staff were polite, but no real investigation followed. I’ve since heard from several colleagues that similar incidents have happened here. I won’t be renewing my membership.
