  My experience is to do with my tour of David LLoyd Kidbrook with Marley. The tour was super informative, welcoming, with no hard sell, and the vibe and the energy of the club was apparent throughout the tour. Marley answered all our questions and indeed, I was quite smitten with layout, equipment and set up.

  The David Lloyd in Kidbrooke is severely lacking, with outdated and inadequate gym facilities that don't match the premium cost. While there are around five cable machines, there aren't enough attachments to supply them, requiring members to hunt for basic arm exercise bars. The free weight area is also insufficient, with a shortage of ten and five kilogram weights, forcing people to search for weights to use. Despite constant feedback to the staff, nothing is done, and the gym feels worse than the budget gym across the road. Even after requesting a small stool for the body monitor machine, where removing shoes is a safety risk, no changes have been made. The only saving grace is the spa area, which is quite nice.

  Very disappointing experience so far. I forgot my headphones case in the locker, after 20 minutes i was back but someone already was using it( it was locked) . Went back to the receptionist (Rose) to ask for help and to try finding who’s using it but unsuccessfully….I do understand they work for minimum wage and no one cares about my case but it’s not like it’s been days after ,i came back almost immediately and It could have been done something. Went back to the changing room , spoke to the cleaning lady as well and another guy and they kept saying that they can’t open the locker and there’s no way to find who’s using it. Left my number and name because they said somebody will check the locker in a few hours ( of course that didn’t happen) , on the top of that no one was picking up the phone around 3:30 when i was calling to check if someone maybe gave the case back . Went to the gym around 7 , the evening shift lady said that there’s no case left and as you can guess it’s not in the locker either.

  2-year member. In my opinion, this is David Lloyd in name only. I’ve been a member for two years and have visited other David Lloyd clubs, so I know what the brand is supposed to offer. This club simply isn’t in the same league. And for the money, that’s pretty embarrassing. Changing rooms The changing rooms are horrible. Cleanliness and general standards are nowhere near what you’d expect from a club charging premium prices. Even more bizarrely, I’ve seen cleaners sitting on their phones in the changing area while members are getting changed. I have pictures to prove it, so please don’t respond by telling me this didn’t happen has it happens the MAJORITY of the time I use it. Having a member of staff sitting next to you with a phone out while you’re undressing is strange, uncomfortable and completely inappropriate for a supposedly premium club. Spa The spa should be one of the main selling points. Instead, it’s another source of frustration. People are constantly allowed to shout and talk loudly in groups without staff doing anything about it. What’s the point of having a supposedly relaxing spa if nobody enforces the most basic rules? Then there’s the equipment. It seems there is almost always a room that is broken, not working properly or operating at a pathetic temperature. The citrus room being barely lukewarm but still open is a perfect example. If it isn’t working properly, fix it. Don’t just leave it open and hope nobody notices. And the ice situation is frankly disgusting. People leave bottles in the ice, including bottles that have been sitting on the floor, and that is then the ice members are expected to put on their faces and bodies. Gym The gym is busy. Constantly busy. The low ceilings make it feel cramped and claustrophobic, and the equipment and décor are nothing special. In fact, there’s a PureGym across the road with much of the same equipment for a fraction of the price. And equipment being out of order is so common that it barely comes as a surprise anymore. Again, if I were paying bargain-basement prices, I’d shrug and get on with it. But I’m not. I’m paying David Lloyd prices. And that’s the problem. There is a huge disconnect between what this club charges and what it actually delivers. The staff interaction is minimal. You can walk in and out without so much as a hello or goodbye. There is very little sense that existing members are valued. It increasingly feels like the club is far more interested in signing up the next new member than looking after the people already paying their substantial monthly fees. I’ve used other David Lloyd clubs and the difference is obvious. They actually feel like premium clubs. This one often feels like an average gym with a David Lloyd logo stuck on the front. If it wasn’t so close to my house, I would have cancelled a long time ago. The frustrating thing is that I’m not expecting perfection. I’m expecting the basics: clean facilities, functioning equipment, appropriate staff behaviour, decent service and a spa that actually feels like a spa. For the price being charged, those shouldn’t be luxury expectations. It has the David Lloyd branding. It has the David Lloyd price. Unfortunately, far too often, it doesn’t have the David Lloyd standard. Two years in, I’m still here largely because of the location. That says everything.
