A Truly Disappointing Experience I joined David Lloyd because I wanted somewhere to de-stress from the pressures of being a carer and somewhere my family could enjoy together. I honestly wish I had never joined. Instead of reducing my stress, David Lloyd has caused me more stress, frustration and upset than I could have imagined. I was upfront from the beginning about my disabled child’s needs. I expected understanding, reasonable adjustments and a family club that genuinely valued inclusion. Instead, I felt belittled, excluded and made to feel like a problem for raising legitimate concerns about disability discrimination. Then came the financial mess. After I was told that I was “trying to get something for nothing”, David Lloyd subsequently took money from my account that I dispute having any authority or contractual basis to take. When I challenged the payment through a Direct Debit indemnity because I believed the money had been taken incorrectly, instead of simply resolving the underlying dispute, I was then told that I would be referred to debt collection and that I needed to pay additional charges/fines. The whole situation is honestly a joke. Imagine joining a premium family club because you're already under enormous pressure as a carer, only to end up fighting over money you believe should never have been taken in the first place — and then being threatened with debt collection when you challenge it. It has left me feeling robbed, bullied, belittled and victimised. And what makes this even more frustrating is that I have actually tried to turn this into something constructive. I have offered David Lloyd the opportunity to explain exactly what went wrong, to hear my concerns and to discuss how they can improve their service for families with similar disability needs. They have had an opportunity to listen and learn. Instead, their response has left me questioning how genuine their commitment to inclusivity, accessibility and supporting disabled families really is. It feels superficial and fake when the reality is that once you challenge the organisation, the focus seems to shift towards defending themselves rather than asking, “What could we have done better?” I joined David Lloyd to help take some stress out of my life as a carer. Instead, all I have received from David Lloyd is more stress. If this is how they treat a family who openly explains their disability-related needs, raises concerns and then tries to engage constructively with them, I would seriously question the reality behind all the glossy promises about being a family-friendly and inclusive club. I genuinely wish I had never joined.
