I was referred to Georgia Center for Oral Facial Surgery & Implants by my dentist. Scheduling was easy from the start—I called and was able to get a consultation appointment without any issues. All preliminary paperwork was completed electronically ahead of time, and I waited until my consultation on October 20th. At my consultation, the front desk staff and technicians were pleasant and professional. I watched an informational video about wisdom tooth extraction, then met with the doctor who recommended having all four wisdom teeth removed using nitrous gas. I agreed. I was then given paperwork outlining the nitrous contract and pre-op instructions. I was also shown my estimated cost and asked if I wanted to pay that day; I chose not to and instead left a $50 deposit, planning to schedule surgery once I confirmed time off from work. When I called back to schedule my procedure, I was told I could make payments leading up to my appointment, which I did. By the day of surgery (November 17th), I owed only $35 of the total $785. On surgery day, Dr. Rools and the assisting tech were excellent—I felt comfortable throughout the procedure. My prescription was ready within a few hours and before the anesthesia wore off. I also asked to keep my wisdom teeth, which they gladly accommodated. On the day of surgery, I asked for an itemized receipt and was told that a manager would need to pull it. Because I was still coming off the anesthesia and preparing to leave, I never received it before exiting the office. I later texted the office requesting the itemized receipt while also asking about the status of my insurance claim submission. The first receipt I received was missing several of my self-payments. After calling and informing the staff of the discrepancy, I did receive a corrected and updated receipt. The most difficult part of this experience has been the insurance submission and reimbursement process. I work in HR and have MetLife PDP Plus dental insurance, so I’m familiar with how reimbursements work and have been reimbursed by other providers in the past. My consultation was billed to insurance within two business days; however, my surgery claim never appeared. After I called in December to inquire, I was told there had been an issue and the claim would be resubmitted. After additional follow-up, I was told there was an electronic submission issue and that the claim was mailed on December 1st. Once my insurance finally received and processed the claim, it confirmed what I suspected—I had overpaid by about $300. While I understand this is a business, the calculations were clearly off. I have followed up multiple times regarding my reimbursement and was told they were still waiting on insurance to pay. The delays and lack of urgency have been frustrating. Businesses tend to move quickly when collecting payment, but much slower when it comes time to return overpayments. Overall, the facility is clean, the staff and doctors are kind and professional, and the clinical care itself was great. I would strongly encourage patients to fully understand their insurance coverage, request and review itemized receipts, monitor claim submissions, and carefully review their explanation of benefits. The economy is tough, but dental care is important, so I paid what was asked—just be sure to advocate for yourself.
