I’ve been to Nicklaus Children’s a few times now and only had positive experiences. My toddler needed to get checked for respiratory virus and they promptly got me in and started checking him. Nurse Joy and Rose were lovely, helpful and kind. We had to be here for a couple hours because of the treatments and they had things to keep the kids entertained and were very understanding and helpful if I needed anything while we were there. This is my go-to place when I can’t go to the regular pediatrician.

I’m giving this facility a three out of five star rating just due to how difficult it is to actually get a hold of the right department and that when you finally do get a hold of somebody they claim to transfer you and then they bring you right back to the main page or it just hangs up on you. There’s not a direct line that you can keep to contact who you need especially if it’s an urgent matter you keep getting the runaround and it takes forever and nobody seems to have the answers when you call. The doctor we seen was helpful, knowledgeable, explain everything for me to understand what was going to happen and treatment wise but could be a little nicer in my opinion with the kids and others asking questions. The facility itself was nice and clean, not a long wait time. The ladies in check in/out were very friendly. It is just the answering service and trying to get a hold of someone is very frustrating and difficult. They don’t have the friendliest attitudes and they seem to not know who to transfer to or how to help you get a hold of who you need is my only issue with them.

My three-year-old son was referred to Dr. Ley earlier this year when we had his three-year check up. My son has been in speech and occupational therapy since he was 18 months old for a speech delay. During this journey, we have had mixed opinions about the root cause… but it was strongly suspected that our son has oral and motor apraxia. We do not suspect our son has autism and when we asked his pediatrician at his check up, his pediatrician agreed. He made the recommendation for neurology just to make sure we were checking all the boxes medically and suggested that we may be able to get some genetic testing if that would be helpful. We waited five months for the appointment to see Dr. Ley. I reviewed her bio prior to the appointment and provided some medical records beforehand to include speech and occupational therapy evaluations. When we were put in the exam room by the MA, we were asked if we wanted an autism assessment during the visit. We declined, given that that wasn’t our concern and reason for the visit. Upon entering the room, Dr. Ley inquired as to why we were making the office visit. We explained that it was suspected that our son had apraxia and that we wanted to speak with her about his speech delay and see if there was anything else that we should be doing to support him. Her literal reply to us was, “pediatricians send children to me because they think they have autism”. My husband and I were very taken back by this. It seemed that just by simply reading some reports and the fact that my son was referred to her at all… she had already come to a conclusion in her head. We felt that we did not get the opportunity to have any meaningful conversation about apraxia, which is a neurological condition. Instead, within a short time of being in the room… she said she was seeing “signs” of autism. These observed “signs” of hers were contradicted by providers that have known my son for a long time. After we advocated, she worked with us to get some genetic testing and concluded that my son did not need a brain scan. We left there very upset and feeling like the visit was not comprehensive. It’s important to note that at one point, she said my son hadn’t acknowledged her presence in the room… Which was one of her “signs” of autism. Upon entering the room, she never said my son’s name, never made any attempt to introduce herself to him, and briefly said hello to him after being in the room for a period of time after it was encouraged by us. We opted not to consent to an autism assessment because we did not trust her objectivity We later got a bill for over $400 for this visit and when I attempted to negotiate the bill… I was told that Dr. Ley exclusively does autism assessments. This is not appropriately described in her bio on the website or indicated clearly. We felt that she lacked empathy, was not patient centered, and had poor bedside manner. I would not suggest using her, regardless of whether you suspect your child has autism or not.

Neurology appointment: I’m really disappointed with how I was treated at this office. I drove an hour and 40 minutes one way to make it to my daughters appointment, only to be turned away because I was 13 minutes late — even though they have a 15-minute grace window. My daughter doesn't do well with long drives. I was so stressed trying to get there on time, and it felt like they didn’t care at all about the effort I made or the distance I traveled. I understand doctors have schedules, but a little compassion and understanding go a long way. I left feeling dismissed and completely unheard. As if life isn't already hard being a special needs parent. We will no longer return to this provider.

We took our child in for a severely sprained ankle. After some delay, some x-rays and a set of crutches I received a bill that was so ridiculous that you could’ve purchased an expensive Swiss watch. It is preposterous, with competent health insurance, that this place would still charge many thousands of dollars for this nominal amount of service. It’s absolute price gouging at its worst! I would go out of my way never to bring my child here ever again. No parents should get ripped off like this.
