Unfortunately, the happy reviews here are outdated.
TLDR; The staff lack respect and customer service skills; they care little about customers. I'm not angry, but I am very disappointed.
My experience:
Unless you've been living under a rock, it's no secret that GNC maximizes profits by influencing those new and ignorant about fitness, health, and product prices, into buying overpriced and/or unneeded products. Broscience is not uncommon at a GNC store. I'm not a noob, meathead, etc; I'm just a regular woman who has overcome obesity and now being health conscious, buys protein products to quickly reach protein goals during busy weeks. Online retailers have competitive pricing, but I sometimes stop by fitness stores because I don't always feel like waiting for shipping, and as expensive as GNC is, some items are surprisingly less than in nearby stores.
If I'm lucky, I can catch bars on clearance. Last month, February 2017, I stopped by on three separate occasions to buy a box of bars that were set for 50% clearance. Now, a month later, I stopped in and noticed that the stack of bars on clearance still hadn't been sold. I thought to myself, "I might as well buy them." However, the cashier there told me that the bars, which were clearly marked and were set to expire in two weeks by this point, were NOT marked down. I told him he might be mistaken, pointing out that I had visited last month and had the discount. He looked me *dead in the eyes* and said the bars were not on clearance and had never been. I thought maybe he was having a rough night or really needed to make a sale or something and visited again sometime later, in the week, and another worker assured me that the bars were indeed discounted. However, as he rung up the discount, I noticed that the bars were marked down to what I was originally charged last month, and then marked higher. The discount was still acceptable, but when I asked about the lower discount, I was told in no uncertain terms that the discount had *always* been that amount. The thing is, this worker was the one who sold me two of my three boxes last month, and the worker who wouldn't even honor the discount sold me the other box. I even triple checked my receipts, the box flavor, and the expiration date to make sure that I was indeed buying the same box this time around.
I've worked in multiple customer service jobs, and I would never lie to a customer. I understand that store policies and prices change and mistakes might be made, so if in fact the bars were only accidentally discounted or marked down before, I would understand. I don't mind too much spending a few more bucks in such a scenario. HOWEVER, in both cases, each worker straight out lied to me about the discounts. To reiterate, I have experience as both a minimum wage worker and a customer; therefore, I am never rude to workers, and I am an all around kind person. Why I was lied to, I don't know. A staff of people who will comfortably lie about something relatively minor such as a discount should not be trusted. Then again, I suppose I shouldn't be surprised considering that lies about needed supplements for fitness goals are freely made to make sales as necessary. Still, I am disappointed in this GNC franchise. So much so, that I ended up being unable to eat the bars, and gave them away to a friend. Although it closer to me than the other Gainesville GNC's, I will stick to the Oaks Mall Corporate GNC.
I still can't believe this actually happened...
