I’ve been a barre instructor for over ten years and wanted to try out pure barre just for a change of pace. Front desk staff is friendly, I bought a ten pack of classes assuming I would really enjoy it. Here are my thoughts:
The flooring in the workout area is a bunch of flat carpet type material squares. Any other barre studio I’ve ever been to is a dry floor that can be sanitized and truly cleaned. The flooring at pure barre could be vacuumed, but otherwise I’m unclear how it could truly be sanitized. The second time I attended a class, I laid down on the floor for a movement and could actually smell the floor. It made me nauseous and I was extremely grossed out. It smelled like a mixture of someone else’s sweat and dirty feet. I think PB believes that the floor is technically “clean” because they require everyone to walk on it with socks. They don’t account for the fact that sweaty bodies are lying on the floor, and the carpeted material is soaking up their sweat and stench. The other thing I’d like to point out is that Pure Barre is very corporate. The instructors don’t plan their own workouts or playlists, so the workout/playlist stays the same for weeks at a time. There is variation from class style to class style, but you won’t find much change otherwise and the music is like a high paced knock off version of a real song. As an instructor who writes my own classes and plans my own playlists, this isn’t something I align with. After going 7 times, I asked if I could gift the other 3 classes to a friend. The front desk girl informed me she’d need to ask the manager if that was okay. Being that I paid for the classes, I would sure think it would be up to me what I do with them? But she said the manager would reach out to me, and I never heard from her. I personally won’t be going back to pure barre which is completely okay, I tried it and made my own decision from there. If you’re looking for an upbeat, high energy, fun and ever-changing classes, this isn’t the studio. I understand that everyone is looking for something different, so make your own decision here, but I wanted to just share my experience.

Pure Barre as an exercise modality, as well as this particular studio, are absolutely outstanding. I joined eight months ago as a mostly sedentary office drone / occasional weekend warrior. It was the hardest workout I’ve ever done, and that hasn’t changed. What has changed is my strength, stamina and muscle tone. I started seeing gains at three months and it’s only gone up from there. At 40 years old, I’m astounded at how far I’ve come in a short time. And the endorphin boost after catching your breath cannot be beat.
It’s all thanks to the incredible women who run this ship. Every instructor I’ve had has been top-notch. They run smooth, professional classes and dole out meaningful praise and helpful form correction. I most often take classes with Lindsay, Ayla, Holly and Abby, though I’d recommend them all. The women at the front desk are wonderfully kind and thoughtful, as well.
The class formats bring a lot of variety to barre — from Classic’s resistance and Align’s stretching to Define’s weightlifting and Empower’s cardio. They have frequent, reliable class times throughout each weekday plus weekend mornings. And yes, they charge $15 if you cancel soon before class. For me, that serves as a great way to ensure I choose the gym over the couch.
I can honestly say Pure Barre has changed my life and health for the better. I’m so grateful to have found this place.
