I have a client who got a really poor quality electric wheelchair that has controls that break down constantly. It takes her for ever to get ahold of anyone, and once she does the appointment to have it repaired takes a month or even sometimes months. Her chair was stuck being unable to recline recently (which she needs, to be positioned into it correctly multiple times daily after getting of bed, being transferred for using the toilet, etc) she is in horrid pain because of not being able to sit correctly and having to sit up at this angle all day with no reclining ability. She has cried due to their lack of taking care of the repairs. She states her wheelchair is her life and when it is broken her life comes to a halt.

Because we work in a partnership with your health care team, we require a referral from them in order to be your mobility provider. To help ensure your choice of NSM, you should request that your physician and/or therapist select us as your provider of choice.
How long does it take to get a new power wheelchair from NSM?

Why must I see a doctor to get a wheelchair from NSM?
Our clients have mobility challenges and are referred to us by therapists and physicians to receive mobility solutions that meets all their unique needs. If you need a wheelchair, your best plan is to talk with your physician or therapist and get a thorough evaluation from a qualified Rehab Technology Supplier (RTS).
What if my medical condition changes?

Are there any dangers in using an off-the-shelf wheelchair?
Definitely. A standard or not customized chair can cause more harm than good. People come in all shapes and sizes; their chairs must be designed to fit them. In severe situations, a standard or not customized chair may:
- Cause significant physiological and psychological problems
- Lead to an increase in dependence because it’s not used due to lack of comfort
- Cause pressure sores, or decubitus, due to improper cushioning
- Become obsolete quickly if not configured to “grow with the child”
- Become a major expense to replace or reconfigure, because most funding sources will only reimburse for a new chair every five years.
