What does a physical therapist do?

Oftentimes, PTs can help their patients avoid surgeries that can introduce many new problems.

How long does the rehab take?

That’s too broad of a question. The same injury can have vastly differing rehab times. Age, previous and current activity level, and other demographics play a role in recovery. Also, compliance with the assigned exercise programs plays a huge role.

Will I get a massage?

Accepted Answer

Not in the traditional sense. We utilize other hands-on techniques such as soft tissue mobilization, the active release technique, and PNF as therapeutic tools to aid in therapy. We evaluate each patient and determine which patients would benefit from hands-on work.

What’s the difference between a physical therapist and a chiropractor?

Physical therapists emphasize exercise, stretches, and manual techniques to treat pain or dysfunction in the muscles and joints. Chiropractors use spinal manipulation techniques to promote optimal joint function.

What should I wear to my appointment?

Athletic clothes are preferred. Shorts are preferred if your pain or dysfunction is related to the lower body. Jeans prevent us from palpating lower body structures, administering modalities, and performing manual therapy.

Why do I have to exercise?

The short answer is that “motion is lotion”. If you want a detailed explanation, it heavily depends on your condition. That’s something your therapist will explain to you during therapy.

How does ultrasound work?

Ultrasound waves create a deep heating effect in muscles, bones, and joints. Deep heat increases blood circulation, allowing nutrients to circulate in and waste to circulate out. This ultimately promotes healing and decreases edema.

How does electrical stimulation work?

Accepted Answer

Electrical stimulation, or e-stim, works through an idea known as gate control theory. In layman’s terms, in order for pain to be felt, the stimulus must travel through neurons into the brain. On the way to the brain, there are “gates” that the stimuli must travel through. These gates can be opened or closed, increasing or inhibiting the effect of the stimuli. E-stim works to flood the gates with its own stimulus (the tingling sensation it gives) that prevents pain information from reaching the brain. The result is a painkiller effect that can last for hours even after the e-stim unit has shut off.
