I am a physician with over 30 years at Scripps and have never previously written a negative review of a healthcare professional. However, my experience with Dr. Michael Torsade compels me to warn patients. Dr. Torsade refused to provide or coordinate standard antibiotic prophylaxis prior to a deep dental cleaning for a patient with a recent hip replacement, despite written Scripps Orthopedic policy and established community standards. He insisted that the orthopedist—not the dentist—should prescribe the antibiotics, which is impractical for many patients and inconsistent with coordinated medical care. Senior academic dental leaders whom I consulted emphasized that dentists are expected to collaborate with referring physicians under current guidelines. Despite this, Dr. Torsade remained unwilling to participate in coordinated care. This office no longer reflects the careful, patient-centered practice it once did. Patients with complex medical conditions or recent joint replacements should proceed with caution.
