An objective review by me of the Santa Barbara branch of National Seating and Mobility cannot be appreciated without understanding that my previous experiences with other companies left me bitterly frustrated, injured physically, and distraught mentally. I've been a quadriplegic for thirty years and have spent the last twenty in powerchairs all day long so there are many considerations that go into the right chair to keep me healthy, safe, and productive. Quite frankly I had pretty much given up hope of finding quality help from a good company until now. The path to acquiring a new Group 3 power chair is long and difficult and needs competent guidance. I am happy to report that National Seating and Mobility of Santa Barbara provided this help every step of the way and my new chair suits my needs better than any I have ever had. If anyone asks, I tell them that they are my go-to company.

When your wheelchair needs an immediate fix it's a crisis. Not only does it affect your mobility but the lack of qualified wheelchair mechanics means you may not be able to see someone ASAP. David E not only gets the job done well, he does it with a calm and empathy that helps reduce the stress you're feeling in the moment. David was flexible and worked with me to get my wife's wheelchair fixed. He gets a five star review, and if Google allowed it I'd tack on a few more stars.
Frequently Asked Questions About National Seating & Mobility
What makes NSM the preferred choice for obtaining mobility solutions?
At NSM, we are uniquely positioned to search hundreds of sources for the precise components needed to create a chair that is made specifically to meet the needs of each client. Each chair can be designed for maximum comfort and ease and will provide the specific therapeutic benefits prescribed for you by the health care team. But what really sets NSM apart is our approach. We work from the heart, honoring your journey of independence with efficient, friendly attention that puts your interests first. This is our life’s work—to help others move through life—and we take it very seriously.
How can I work with NSM for my mobility needs?
National Seating & Mobility is a member of your rehabilitation health care team. We work with your physician, nurses and therapists to provide a one-of-a-kind mobility solution customized to your needs and preferences. Because we work in a partnership with your health care team, we require a referral from them in order to be your mobility provider. To help ensure your choice of NSM, you should request that your physician and/or therapist select us as your provider of choice.
How long does it take to get a new power wheelchair from NSM?
NSM strives to complete each timeline phase as quickly as possible without compromising any step in the process. Please refer to this page for the full timeline. We appreciate your patience and understanding.
Why must I see a doctor to get a wheelchair from NSM?
Our clients have mobility challenges and are referred to us by therapists and physicians to receive mobility solutions that meets all their unique needs. If you need a wheelchair, your best plan is to talk with your physician or therapist and get a thorough evaluation from a qualified Rehab Technology Supplier (RTS).
What if my medical condition changes?
Contact your local NSM branch and notify us of any changes that may affect the proper fit and function of your chair.
Are there any dangers in using an off-the-shelf wheelchair?
Definitely. A standard or not customized chair can cause more harm than good. People come in all shapes and sizes; their chairs must be designed to fit them. In severe situations, a standard or not customized chair may:
- Cause significant physiological and psychological problems
- Lead to an increase in dependence because it’s not used due to lack of comfort
- Cause pressure sores, or decubitus, due to improper cushioning
- Become obsolete quickly if not configured to “grow with the child”
- Become a major expense to replace or reconfigure, because most funding sources will only reimburse for a new chair every five years.
Do I have a choice of which mobility solutions company to use?
The choice of a wheeled mobility supplier is yours. Discuss your decision with your physician and therapist.
