I was there yesterday for a touch-up cataract procedure, and Dr. Elkins was gentle and kind, as always. No pain, no problems! The staff I encountered were exceptionally sweet, too. I've been a patient of Dr. Elkins for years, and will continue to be, always.

TL;DR: Dr. Aizuss accurately diagnosed me with a posterior subcapsular cataract last July, said I didn’t need surgery immediately, and advised me that I would probably need surgery in a year or less. While he did not push me into surgery, he also did not counsel me on the risks of waiting for surgery until the cataract was affecting my quality of life. My resultant surgery ended up being riskier. I would have appreciated more counseling on the risks of waiting.
I am not the typical cataract patient. I am 38 years old and was referred by my optometrist for further evaluation of my left eye for suspected cataract. Dr. Aizuss easily diagnosed me with a posterior subcapsular cataract and advised me that I did not need surgery immediately. He said that I would know when it was time to need surgery and that patients had varying tolerances for the effects of this kind of cataract and when it starts impacting their lives. He indicated that I would probably need surgery in a year but if in 6 months things were bad that I should call for a surgical consult appointment. He briefly explained the types of lenses available and recommended a monofocal lens. In 6 months I was basically blind in that eye, which seemed to happen overnight. Apparently it is common in this type of cataract. Because I wanted the latest multifocal lens, I chose another surgical practice for the actual surgery. The reason, however, that I felt compelled to write a review was that during the surgical consultation with that different surgical practice, I found out that the cataract was so advanced that even with multiple types of machines for measuring the eye that are used to choose the correct lens power for the implant, they were barely able to get a measurement. In addition, the cataract was pushing out my iris and creating pressure that made my lens capsule like an expanded balloon. It made the surgery a lot riskier. After that consultation, I reflected on what Dr. Aizuss had told me and I wished that he had counseled me on what the risks were to waiting on surgery. While I appreciate that he was not trying to push me into surgery, had I received more counseling on the risks of waiting for surgery, I would have opted for surgery sooner. I clearly fell into the camp that Dr. Aizuss spoke of that was not bothered by the effects of the cataract until I was basically blind in that eye. It seems because I had excellent vision in my non-affected dominant eye my brain was good at compensating. From my research on cataracts, the advice of when to get surgery seems to line up well with age related cataracts but in my situation, I would have appreciated more counseling on the risks of waiting.
