- SRSun Ra6 days ago2.0We shop mostly due to the convenient location and the fact that Martin’s carries brands that other stores don’t, and do so semi-regularly- however, we buy the bulk of our groceries at stores with lower prices. The increase in surveillance at Martins, particularly the front facing cameras and creepy instant playback on self checkout, is becoming increasingly aggressive, and it feels more unpleasant to interact with both the technology and the staff, who are conditioned by this system to treat customers doing the labor that the store doesn’t want to pay human cashiers to do, as potential thieves rather than neighbors and members of the community who are there accessing essential services. Every digital coupon should have a paper equivalent. Not every person wants or needs yet another app running in the background of their smartphone, nor does every community member have a smartphone for that matter. Every customer deserves dignity, and each encounter with this technology leaves me feeling uncomfortable and unwelcome. If you’re concerned about people shoplifting, employ adequate cashiers. The only reason to use self checkout is for speed- but it’s never shorter than an interaction with a trained human cashier.
