The year was 1943, and Jim and Alice Wimmer decided to take a big risk, buying a small existing roadside restaurant known for its char-broiled steaks. How fitting that in 2018, the restaurant’s 75th anniversary year, the third generation of Wimmers, Amy Wimmer, takes the helm from her father Jeff and his wife Jane, bringing her own adventurous spirit to the Del-Bar, the same kind of spirit she so admired in her grandparents.
Rich History • 75 Years & 3 Generations • Award Winning Cuisine
While flattering comparisons to steakhouses in Chicago and New York are regularly made by visitors, Amy Wimmer still cherishes this restaurant, her family restaurant, as one-of-a-kind.
Overall, customers praised the food quality, particularly the steaks, seafood, and appetizers, with many calling it some of the best they've had.
Service Excellence
The service received high marks, with numerous reviews highlighting attentive, friendly, and professional staff who went above and beyond.
Atmosphere
The ambiance was frequently described as cozy, elegant, and suitable for special occasions, contributing positively to the dining experience.
Mixed Experiences
Some customers reported inconsistencies in food preparation and service, with a few experiencing issues with their meals or service quality.
Value for Money
While many felt the dining experience justified the higher prices, some reviews mentioned that the food did not meet expectations relative to the cost.

This was our 1st visit, to celebrate a birthday and we were very pleased. The meal was excellent, especially liked the app, meatballs with polenta. Our server Alexander was great. He knew exactly when to approach the table and when to allow us time to chat and enjoy our meal. That is an important characteristic of a good server. Everything was wonderful.

The Del Bar lives up to it's name and what it's known for!! Me and my family were there for the first time and it won't be the last! Got there before our reservations to enjoy a drink and Sam was amazing and friendly. Once seated in one of there beautiful dining rooms, Alexandrou was incredibly professional and prompt, thank you! Then food, absolutely delicious. Get the cheese curds!! Can't wait to go back!

The food was actually really good, except for the fact that they over salted the steaks and even one of the deserts had a lot of salt. And you know it's that Morton's ionized salt too. I usually cook with sea salt, so it's not hard to tell the difference. Ionized leaves that sting on your tongue and lingers throughout the rest of the meal. If it wasn't for that it would be a 5 star review easily.

We've been coming to Del Bar since Jimmy's name was still on the sign, 40+ years. The restaurant has grown over that time, as has my waist line. :)
But the quality of the food, service and the comfortable atmosphere are as impressive as our first visit. We're from the Chicago area, close to many excellent restaurant options.
But we chose to visit Del Bar to celebrate our 45th anniversary.
Everything was excellent and made even better because of the exceptional service from Baruk, our waiter.

This spot has become progressively worse over the past five years. M extended family have always hyped this place up even before my husband and I moved to Wisconsin. I thought it was pretty decent the first two times we came, which would have been 2021 and 2022. From 2023 to 2025 the food and quality has gone down significantly. I've always gotten the 6oz filet mignon and now all of the sudden it's super tough to cut in to and has no flavor. I also usually ask for bone marrow butter. They basically douse the steak in butter to mask the poor quality steak. They've also overcooked and burned my husband's steaks for the past three years. This most recent visit he had the steak that comes with chimichurri sauce. Do not ever order this. The chimichurri tasted like straight up grass mixed with cheap tasting olive oil, also lacked all of the basic seasonings that come in that specific sauce. They've started to cut corners on their food to save on costs and it reflects in their food. As for service, they don't really do anything extra special, which is fine, but once again....for the amount of money you're paying it's not like they are going above and beyond to give you the most unique experience you will ever have at an "upscale" steakhouse. For the amount of money people are paying to eat here - you're better off just getting your own cuts of meat from your local butcher and cooking at home. It will not only taste 100 times better, but you'll also be spending half of the money and be less disappointed in your home cooked meal.
