I placed a to‑go order at the counter and was greeted warmly at first. However, once the staff saw that I hadn’t added a tip for a to‑go order, the service noticeably changed. The cashier walked back to the kitchen, and from that point on the experience went downhill. The customer ahead of me, who had tipped, received friendly conversation and care from the cook. When my order was ready one minute later, the cook called out “74” without eye contact, dropped the bag on the counter, and immediately turned away. The food itself reflected the shift in attitude. My fries were completely undercooked — they came out of the cup as one clump of warm potatoes — and the burger patty was raw in the center. I couldn’t eat any of it, so I essentially wasted $20. I don’t visit often because it’s expensive, but the food is usually good. That’s why this experience stood out. I believe tipping is for good service, not something expected for fast‑food takeout, and certainly not something that should affect the quality or safety of the food being served. I’m sharing this because I hope management will address the behavior I witnessed. No customer should receive different treatment — or unsafe food — based on whether they tip for a to‑go order. Updated: I appreciate Five Guys reaching out. However, the link provided requires me to submit extensive personal information and agree to Five Guys full privacy policy and arbitration terms before I can even describe what happened. I’m not comfortable entering into a legal agreement or sharing unnecessary personal data just to report a service issue. If Five Guys genuinely wants to address this situation, please provide a direct, non‑contractual way to communicate with management — one that does not require waiving rights, submitting to arbitration, or authorizing broad data sharing. I’m willing to discuss the incident, but not under terms that place all obligations on the customer. Based on Five Guys’ own privacy policy and rights‑request form language, submitting through their link means: - You must provide full personal information (name, address, email, etc.) for them to “identify you in their systems.” - Any information you submit can be processed under their privacy policy, which explicitly states that by submitting information you agree to their terms, including how they collect, use, and share your data. - Your submission is treated as a formal rights request, not a simple complaint — meaning they may store the data, keep a record of the request, and apply their legal terms to it. - Their privacy policy is incorporated into their Terms & Conditions, which include dispute‑resolution clauses such as arbitration. The link isn’t just “tell us what happened.” It’s “agree to Five Guy's legal framework first.” - Discourages customers from speaking up unless they’re willing to hand over personal data. - Potentially chills honest reviews, because arbitration clauses can be used to pressure customers into removing public complaints. Even if they never intend to use those clauses against you, the fact that the only path they offer requires agreeing to them is unreasonable.

We always enjoy Five Guys. The one in Hazel Dell, Washington is one of our favorites when traveling through Washington. It is easily accessible from I-5, has adequate parking, and friendly staff. The cheeseburgers were excellent and the establishment was clean. Only minor criticism is that the fries could have been warner. We dined in and they were mildly warm, but not hot as per usual. We would visit this location again and would recommend it to others.
