I had to drive to different Safeways to buy the vodka bottle cuz of language barriers; the employee at Safeways (3305) was unwilling to explain why he took my vodka bottle away after I showed him my license. He never gave me a reason why. I showed the sign “I am Deaf” so clearly. He seemed not to care and just kept working. He had me finish buying the mixer against my will. It really humiliated me. Other employees were friendly, but one employee at the self-checkout did ableism.

What made it more frustrating was that she made direct eye contact with me while putting in the other person’s order. Maybe there was some confusion, but it still felt like I was completely ignored. Even after I spoke up, she didn’t acknowledge me at all. To be clear, it was the older barista— the younger one was very kind and polite to both me and my grandmother.
