I’ve been shopping here for about 2 years. And while I understand it’s not the safest area, things at this store have gone too far that it has made me not want to shop at any Safeway or affiliate stores again. I understand that product shrinkage and theft is a big deal, but when it ends with the solution of every customer being viewed a potential criminal thief, perhaps it has gone too far.
First they shut the north entrance doors for entry, that was fine, prevent people from running out with products. Then it was installing security gates at the front. Then removing handbaskets, then monitoring self checkout and limiting amounts. While putting a 15 item limit and only one check stand open. Then locking merchandise.
Originally my complaint started a few weeks ago when I came in to get pregnancy tests. Again they were locked and I called for an associate. After associate grabbed them, he had made a comment along the lines of “oh the multiple pack, must be hoping it’s negative, good luck” at which point i said “oh we’ve been actually trying for a bit” while i brushed it off as just a misplaced comment and didn’t think much of it, it did leave a imprint in my mind. But it is worth mentioning, I have not seen this associate since, and all other associates here have been nothing less than incredibly nice.
Today I came in after my wife had some mouth surgery and wanted to get her favorite ice cream to cheer her up and ease the pain. When I went to grab it I realized a lock on the door and I had to call for an associate. Sure, whatever, I expected him to hand it to me from the locked case. No, I must ask for it back when done shopping at checkout! So I proceed to the front, with my items including beer, that was NOT behind yet another locked display. While getting ID’ed, I had to ask for the ice cream to then purchase.
Now im not a store owner, nor claim that I could run the store better, or have a good solution for theft. However, when these so called solutions treat every customer as a potential threat to the bottom line and a potential thief, maybe it’s time to reevaluate your solution. The only thing this store is missing is a TSA check in and metal detectors at the front. Shopping here now feels less like grocery shopping, and grabbing stuff for dinner, as it does shopping at a prison commissary.
If the store really has this many problems it needs high security on ice cream and not beer, single entrance, and a security gate at that entrance, perhaps this store shouldn’t be here at all. It is putting far worse of a negative view in consumers mind than Safeway is netting with it.
